Robert Saleh's firing should make Patriots thankful Aaron Rodgers trade was rejected
The drama never stops in the NFL, which has also been the case for the New England Patriots this season. Fortunately, the latest headlines coming out of the AFC East don't involve or impact them much at all, making it all the more interesting to watch unfold.
Instead, the unsurprising shenanigans expected from the Aaron Rodgers-led New York Jets are back with the completely unexpected news of head coach Robert Saleh's firing on Tuesday morning. While the Jets could be considered a team that has been underperforming thus far, given their roster, it's hard to argue that Saleh wasn't in the hot seat with a 2-3 start.
However, firing a head coach after Week 5 is unprecedented and seems far too early in the season to even consider such a move, making many believe something big behind the scenes took place, or even worse, Rodgers had something to do with it.
Although quarterbacks aren't generally given that much power over an organization, Rodgers has had a lot of say in roster building since he arrived in New York. It explains why his former teammates were signed in free agency and other roster decisions, and based on the awkward exchange between him and Saleh during the Patriots matchup in Week 3, many believe he could have had a say in his firing in one way or another.
It's just the latest example of Patriots fans needing to be gracious that the alleged trade offer Bill Belichick extended to the Packers for the quarterback was rejected, as they could be dealing with this kind of drama instead.
The drama that comes with Aaron Rodgers would not have been worth it for the Patriots
The rumor of Belichick's alleged trade offer came from Fox Sports host Craig Carton last summer, who stated the quarterback vetoed the trade because he had no interest in going to the Patriots or working with the head coach.
It's unclear how much truth there is to the rumor, but it's very clear how much Belichick admires and respects Rodgers, making it seem much more plausible than other rumors that have come up over the years.
On top of that, inserting Rodgers onto the Patriots' roster could have saved the offense and potentially kept Belichick on New England's sideline, so it doesn't seem too outlandish to believe it is a possibility.
Instead, the Patriots have their own issues to attend to while being entertained by the implosion of their AFC East rival, who was raved about as a Super Bowl contender all offseason.
