Predicting the New England Patriots' first-round draft pick this year is far different and more difficult than it has been in recent memory, mainly because they are not on the clock until the end of the round rather than at the start. But there are some indicators of the direction they're going toward, and their most recent visits seem to point to one position: defensive end.
During the pre-draft process so far, Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf have already met with five EDGE players, with plans to meet with more, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss, who reported that the team is set to host Florida edge defender George Gumbs Jr.
Given the depth of the position in this year's class, on top of the significant need on the roster, it's fair to assume that they will be their first round pick, and there are a few players who continue to be mocked to the Patriots that we'll have to keep an eye on.
Eliot Wolf made it clear that the Patriots want to add more talent to their defensive line
Because they're not set to make their first selection until pick No. 31, there won't be as many options for the Patriots to choose from as in years past.
However, stars like Cashius Howell, Akheem Mesidor, and Zion Young are projected to be late-round picks or early second-rounders, giving them better options than some might think, given how far down the draft board they are.
Eliot Wolf already stated that the Patriots want to improve their EDGE room, prioritizing speed and power to help fill the gaps in the roster. There will be players available that fit those needs, and all signs point to one of them being their first-round pick.
“Yeah, we could complement our room with some speed. I think I think that’s evident. Dre’mont and Harold (Landry) and Elijah (Ponder) and some of the other guys we have, they all have their skill sets. We would like to get faster.
You know, Dre’mont’s a guy that can play across the line, run games. I mean, he can sneakily beat you with speed, but that’s probably not his bread and butter. And that’s an area that we’re looking, again, looking to try to improve the depth on the roster.”
Considering their other needs and how the rest of the draft is projected to go, landing a top pass rusher early would be their best choice. Many of the biggest names are expected to go in the first round, so if the Patriots wait too long, they won't get a problem solver, and that's what they need.
Other positions need to be prioritized as well, and fortunately, they are equipped with a good amount of draft capital to trade up for some of the best talent in the class, and it's projected they will do just that.
If they solve one of their biggest weaknesses from the 2025 season and make their defense that much more threatening, the upcoming season could be even more fruitful than the last. Of course, making it to the Super Bowl again won't be easy, but they did it with a less impressive roster already, so anything is possible.
And snagging a top name defender would certainly help get there again.
