The majority of New England Patriots fans knew what Eliot Wolf needed to prioritize early on during the NFL's free agency period. One of those top priorities was to, of course, give quarterback Drake Maye some upgraded weapons in the passing game.

With the legal tampering period open, New England began doing exactly that. On Day 2, the Patriots agreed to terms with former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs. It is a 4-year deal worth $80 million for the 2022 fourth-round pick out of Nevada.

A lot of fans are now asking the question of whether or not this is the Patriots' plan to give Maye his legitimate WR1, and that's a loaded question/topic at the moment because New England might not be done yet.

In that same conversation, though, longtime Packers expert Freddie Boston of Lombardi Ave was able to give us some excellent insight on Doubs.

"Romeo Doubs is incredibly underrated. He isn't a true WR1 who dominates the targets every week, but he's reliable, makes tough catches, and steps up in big moments. Jordan Love leaned on Doubs, just as Aaron Rodgers did during their brief time together."

It sure sounds like the New England Patriots gave Drake Maye exactly what he needed in Romeo Doubs

Boston went on to talk about where Doubs shines the brightest.

"It's worth noting that his two best statistical performances (151 yards, one TD vs. Dallas in 2024, and 124 yards, one TD vs. Chicago in 2025) came in the playoffs. Doubs might not consistently steal the spotlight, but he will instantly make any offense better."

Judging off of Boston's comments, the Patriots got exactly what they needed in Doubs: a wide receiver who steps up in the biggest moments.

If the Patriots' 2025 season was any indication, this team is going to be a postseason and Super Bowl contender for a while. Their window is wide open, and a player like Doubs will have plenty of opportunities to step up on big stages.

Watching Doubs from afar, the one thing that does ring true, is his ability to make the difficult catches. So many of his receptions have come on impressive grabs, it's seemed. And, if he is doing that in crunch time or in pivotal games, for the Patriots, this contract is worth every penny.

With that in mind, he'll fit right in with the likes of Kayshon Boutte, who also has a knack for those jaw-dropping plays ever so often. The Patriots' receiver room, with Doubs now included, offers Maye a wide variety of playmakers who can do a lot of different things at a high level.

Now, if the Patriots go out and get a true alpha like A.J. Brown, for example, then the rest of the AFC is in a world of trouble.
