The first round of the 2024 NFL Draft went on without a hitch, and the Patriots hit it out of the park with their selection of quarterback Drake Maye. They finally have the signal caller of their dreams and can now focus on building up the offense around him on Day 2 on Friday night.

There are a few positions that look like the frontrunners to be the focus for Rounds 2 and 3, mostly offensive tackle and wide receiver.

Because both classes are said to be deep, the Patriots will have a variety of talented prospects to choose from in both rounds.

When do the Patriots pick next in the 2024 NFL Draft?

The Patriots are set to have two picks on Day 2 of the draft, which will feature Rounds 2 and 3, making for an even longer evening than Round 1.

Before making any trades, New England will have picks No. 34, the second pick of the second round, and pick No. 68, the fourth pick of the third round.

Note: Patriots traded pick No. 34 to the Chargers and instead chose at pick No. 37

With back-to-back top-of-the-round selections, they will have a good shot at landing some game-changing players to add to the roster.

Recent history of Patriots Day Two picks:

Looking back at the history of the Patriots' picks in the second and third rounds, it's a mixed bag of misses. Bill Belichick was great at putting together winning rosters during his twenty-year tenure in New England, but he wasn't known for being great at drafting players.

A few names remain with the team today, some of which have prominent roles, while others didn't last the entirety of their rookie contracts.

Hopefully, Mayo and Wolf will have better luck this time around.

  • 2023: DL Keion White and DB Marte Mapu
  • 2022: WR Tyquan Thornton and CB Marcus Jones
  • 2021: DL Christian Barmore and DE Ronnie Perkins
  • 2020: S Kyle Dugger, LB Josh Uche, LB Anfernee Jennings, TE Devin Asiasi, TE Dalton Keene
  • 2019: CB Joejuan Williams, LB Chase Winovich, RB Damien Harris, T Yodny Cajuste
  • 2018: CB Duke Dawson

Recent history of 34th pick in NFL Draft:

Many talented players have been drafted with the 34th overall pick, making it even more exciting for the Patriots to have that selection.

Historically, some good receivers have been available at this spot, which is great news for New England who will likely be looking to take a pass catcher with the pick.

  • 2023: TE Sam LaPorta (Lions)
  • 2022: WR Christian Watson (Packers)
  • 2021: WR Elijah Moore (Jets)
  • 2020: WR Michael Pittman Jr. (Colts)
  • 2019: DB Rock Ya-Sin (Colts)
  • 2018: OL Will Hernandez (Giants)

It will be a great second round if the team finds a player with the explosiveness and reliability of guys like Sam LaPorta and Michael Pittman Jr.

Recent history of 68th pick in NFL Draft:

Looking ahead to the Patriots' third round pick, hopefully they will have better options than what the selection has turned out over the last six years.

Most of those picked at this spot in the third round didn't become big names in the league, which the Patriots can't afford to happen.

  • 2023: QB Hendon Hooker (Lions)
  • 2022: DB Martin Emerson (Browns)
  • 2021: OL Jalen Mayfield (Falcons)
  • 2020: DB Ashtyn Davis (Jets)
  • 2019: LB Jachai Polite (Jets)
  • 2018: DB Justin Reid (Texans)
