The debate about whether the Patriots are making the right decision by continuing to start Jacoby Brissett at quarterback remained the topic of discussion during their Week 5 loss to the Dolphins and has taken on new life in the hours since.

Throughout the season, Jerod Mayo and the coaching staff have remained supportive of Brissett in his efforts despite his evident shortcomings, some of which are solely on his shoulders. It was clear the decision was to keep him under center as long as possible, with various reports hinting at why there might be a hesitance to start Maye. But that might not be the case anymore.

The new chatter began when Mayo met with the media early Monday morning to discuss the Patriots latest loss. He was, of course, asked about Brissett's performance, which fell short in the team's bid to win the game late in the fourth quarter.

Instead of sticking to his usual script of outright supporting Brissett, we heard a different take from the head coach that made many recognize the difference in his tone.

He didn't hide his disappointment and made direct statements about Brissett's less than ideal day, which was drastically different than his previous defense of the quarterback through the first month of the season.

The moment caught the attention of fans and reporters, prompting many to believe that Maye would finally be getting the start against the Texans next Sunday. Although Mayo didn't directly answer the question outright, it looks like NFL insider Adam Schefter might have dropped the bombshell himself.

The cat might be out of the bag regarding the Patriots plans to start Drake Maye

After Mayo's media availability concluded, Schefter took to his Twitter/X in response to the quarterback situation and seemed to reveal the Patriots might go with Maye under center in Week 6.

While he didn't state it as a fact, it is unlike him to say something without having a reason to report it, making many believe this was a not so subtle hint about the Patriots upcoming plans for a quarterback change.

Because reporters were not able to directly ask Mayo about this tidbit from Schefter, it's unclear whether the statement is valid. Given how poorly the offense has operated through the first five games, it wouldn't be shocking if there was a quarterback change. But it's also quite the opponent to make the change, as the Texans are set to come to town next week.

Fortunately, the offensive line performed better than it had against the Dolphins this past weekend, which might not be saying much. However, it was far from expected, as it was David Andrews' first missed game.

That could be perfect timing for Maye to step in and settle some of the uneasiness surrounding his potential start behind an inconsistent offensive line. If they can maintain that type of performance, then it's hard to argue against starting the rookie, especially if he's considered the better quarterback.

There are certainly pros and cons to keeping him benched or starting and the Patriots will have a lot to consider moving forward.
