Latest proposal for Patriots to trade for Brandon Aiyuk makes no sense

With preseason right around the corner, most teams in the NFL are focused on trying to narrow down their rosters rather than add to them. The next few weeks will be spent evaluating players on the practice field and their performances in preseason games, with the final roster cut coming at the end of the month.

However, a few players are still seeking extensions from their current teams, making them potentially tradable before Week 1 begins, with the main player being Brandon Aiyuk. The saga between the receiver and the 49ers continues deep into training camp, with rumors flooding the new cycle about what his fate might be with the team.

Because trading him is still an option, especially since San Francisco is yet to reach an agreement on a new contract, the Patriots remain front and center as the likeliest team to acquire him.

By this point, plenty of proposals have been suggested regarding how New England could pull off the deal, some of which have included players they could send in return, like Matthew Judon or JuJu Smith-Schuster.

But the latest proposal by Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area might be the wildest one yet, simply because it doesn't make a lot of sense for either team.

A swap of receivers between the Patriots and 49ers doesn't make a lot of sense

In his proposal, Maiocco shares his belief that the Patriots are one of the most logical trade partners for the 49ers if they choose to ship off Aiyuk. He then suggests the Patriots include their own receiver in the trade, on top of a few draft picks in 2025.

"The Patriots are another logical trade partner for the 49ers. The Patriots could offer former 49ers wide receiver Kendrick Bourne as part of a trade that includes an enticing package of 2025 draft picks."

While it would be great for the Patriots to finally add a game-changing wide receiver to their roster, which Aiyuk would be, and then some, shipping off Kendrick Bourne in the trade doesn't make a lot of sense. His former teammate would be an upgrade, but at the same time, the Patriots just extended Bourne this offseason.

So why would they then trade him just a few months later? Not to mention, throwing in Bourne on top of multiple draft picks next year is a hefty price for just one player in return.

This proposal seems more like a dream scenario for a 49ers fan than anything that could potentially happen in reality.
