Patriots don't neglect the defense in the later rounds

Rd. 4, Pick No. 103: TE Jared Wiley, TCU

A long-term answer at tight end is found in Jared Wiley. He’s huge at 6-6 250-pounds, but moves very smoothly and ran a 4.6 40-yard dash, which is impressive at his size.

Wiley was underutilized at TCU, but he made big plays when used as a receiver. Being a weapon is how to get the most out of Wiley early, as he has to get stronger. That will make him a better blocker and well-rounded.

Rd. 5, Pick No. 137: Edge Xavier Thomas, Clemson

The Patriots need depth at pass rusher, and Xavier Thomas can provide that. New England’s future on the edge is nebulous, as the frequently injured Josh Uche re-signed for just one year and Matthew Judon is returning from a season-ending injury.

Thomas is a little undersized, but he’s quick off the snap and has a solid motor. Thomas can generate pressure off of second and third efforts, and has enough speed to chase down elusive passers.

Rd. 6, Pick No. 180: DT Khristian Boyd, Northern Iowa

The Patriots made the tough decision to release Lawrence Guy, leaving a void along the defensive line. Signing free agent Armon Watts is a start to fill the hole. Khristian Boyd has the potential to be the long-term solution.

Boyd is built like a hydrant. He’s 6-2, 320 pounds, but his arms lack ideal length. He’s a small school stud that likely needs developmental time to adjust to playing against tougher competition. But the potential is there for Boyd to become a solid run defender.
