Julian Edelman perfectly summed up Bill Belichick with NSFW quote
After the news about Bill Belichick and the Patriots parting ways last week, several current and former players began sharing their gratitude and thoughts about him on social media. Many made simple posts of sharing photos with a short caption, while a few others made sure to discuss their feelings in a video format.
That's what Julian Edelman chose to do initially, posting a compilation video of his favorite moments with Belichick. Now, he went into further detail about what the coach meant to him during a recent appearance on Tom Brady's "Let's Go!" podcast.
The former wide receiver didn't mince words when asked about his departure from New England, reiterating that he was a tough guy to play for but that's what made everyone better players at the end of the day.
"Yeah, he was tough. Yeah, you hated him. Yes, he was a f***ing asshole. But he made you better.
He coached everyone a little different because he felt certain people needed certain things to make them play better. And I was one— I was in that category where, you know, you didn't get that love. It was like the better you did, the more shade he would give you just to show the other 53 guys…"
That has been a shared feeling amongst most who played in New England for much of their career. They may not have always liked Belichick or how he coached them, but there's a reason they won six Super Bowls in 20 years, and a lot of it resulted from his tough-love approach.
Edelman understood that more than anyone, as he wasn't expected to make the team when he was drafted in the seventh round of the 2009 draft.
And it wasn't just because of where he was drafted. The Patriots had an elite slot receiver at the time in Wes Welker, but it didn't take long for Edelman to prove he was worthy of being in that role.
He then took it to a more serious note, sharing his desire to see Belichick finally pass Don Shula's record of most wins by an NFL head coach in league history. Other than wanting to see that for a coach he admires, he also wants to see it so he can have the privilege of being able to say he worked with the best of the best in several roles.
"I love coach. I wish him the best. I hope he gets the record so I can put on my resume that I played with the best receiver of all time (Randy Moss), the best quarterback of all time (Tom Brady), and I played with the best football coach of all time.”
He seemed to forget to mention Rob Gronkowski as the best tight end of all time, but his point remains valid.
