Jerod Mayo repeats his script regarding Patriots' QB situation after 49ers loss

The feeling surrounding the Patriots' chances going into their Week 4 matchup with the 49ers wasn't very optimistic, especially after their stinker against the Jets last Thursday night. Although San Francisco was dealing with a long list of injuries on offense, nearly every play was active by game time, removing any hope New England might have had to take advantage of their absences and squeak out a win.

It was clear early on that those players (George Kittle, Brock Purdy, and Deebo Samuel) were closer to 100% than what was being said all week, and they proved that in a dominating fashion during the game on Sunday.

The defense struggled to keep big plays at bay, with impressive receptions by almost every pass catcher on the roster. It was an unfortunate development, given how poorly the Patriots' offense performed, too, which was expected yet a bit worse than anticipated.

From losing starting linemen David Andrews and Caedan Wallace early in the game and Jacoby Brissett committing his first turnovers of the season (one of which was a pick-6) to Rhamondre Stevenson recording his fourth fumble in four games which led to a 49ers field goal, it couldn't have been a worse outing for a team in need of a shocking win.

Because of the continued struggles all around, calls for Drake Maye to replace Brissett began early in the game, or at the very least, to end it. That never happened, however, and based on Mayo's post-game comments, it doesn't look like that will change any time soon, either.

Jerod Mayo shoots down the possibility of benching Jacoby Brissett for Drake Maye

With their Week 5 game against the Dolphins on the radar as a starting point for the rookie quarterback, it was one of the first questions the head coach was asked when speaking to reporters after the game.

Much like how he has answered the question since Maye was drafted, Mayo stood his ground and asserted that Brissett is still their starting quarterback, leaving little possibility of that change coming in the week ahead.

Whether right, wrong, or indifferent, there are plenty of reasons to believe Maye should and shouldn't replace Brissett right now or at all this season. One of the primary issues they've been dealing with is the inconsistency of the offensive line, which only worsened in this game by losing Andrews and Wallace.

Yet, at the same time, it's certainly fair to argue that the offense needs a boost, and Maye could be the sole provider of that. We saw flashes of what he could do during the preseason, and he performed pretty well in the limited minutes he got against the Jets. So, maybe it's worth a shot?

Regardless of what analysts and fans think, Mayo has made up his mind (or upper management has, if you want to follow the current discourse online) to stick with Brissett. That's the plan for now and the immediate future, so don't hold your breath on a quarterback change just yet.
