The quarterback competition in Foxboro rages on, as the latest Patriots training camp had drastically different performances between Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye. The veteran has remained the presumed starter for this upcoming season, a point Jerod Mayo has made several times throughout the offseason, but there was a belief the rookie might run past him as practices continued.

Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case, and it has almost gone in the opposite direction. Brissett has looked impressive since re-joining the team that drafted him, completing impressive throws and utilizing various receivers in the process. He's looked poised and comfortable, which is all you could want in your expected QB1.

On the other hand, Maye has had a few eye-popping throws that reminded you of just how good of an arm he has. But he has yet to outshine his teammate and demonstrate that there is tough competition for the starting role this fall.

It's created concern amongst fans and reporters despite the overall optimism that Maye will catch up and start to show what we all saw from him during his days at UNC.

There's still plenty of time for that to happen, as it is only the second week of training camp, but based on Mayo's latest comments regarding the battle for the top spot, it's not looking like Maye has a real chance to be the starter this year.

Jerod Mayo reveals there's almost no possibility of Drake Maye being the Patriots starter in 2024

Kay Adams was present for the Patriots' practice on Monday and interviewed a few coaches and players once the day concluded. She posed the hypothetical situation of Brissett and Maye being neck and neck at the end of the preseason and followed it up by asking how Mayo would decide the starter.

In a short response, after stating it was a tough question to answer, Mayo shared his belief it only made sense to go with the experience at that point, meaning the QB1 would be Brissett.

Given his reasoning behind his response, it makes sense why it would be safer to go with the veteran if the competition was that close. However, it begs the question if this was the plan all along, no matter which quarterback the team decided to draft.

Was there ever a chance of Maye being the starter? Is this response from Mayo just based on what we've seen from the rookie thus far on the practice field? How likely is it that he does do enough to be named the starting role?

Maybe there's virtually nothing Maye can do to alter his apparent immediate future, and it can be argued that is what is best for him and the Patriots. It's not always a good situation to put a rookie quarterback under center, as we saw with Mac Jones over the last three years, and with the team having a questionable offensive line and possibly a less-than-ideal receiving corps, Maye sitting for most of if not all of his rookie year could be beneficial.

Fortunately, Mayo did state that Maye is doing all the right things right now and has had nothing but praise in recent weeks for his effort and development. That's a good sign despite the increasingly low chance he will take the field this season.
