Even Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett sides with Patriots over controversial OT call

The start of the Patriots Week 2 game vs. the Seahawks looked great, with rookie wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk scoring the first touchdown and the first of his career. It was an exciting way to get the game going after a failed first drive, but the rest of the afternoon was chaotic at best.

There were several issues with all parts of the team this week, not just the offense, unfortunately. Although the defense wound up coming out more solid again, they were also a big factor in why the Patriots weren't able to slow the Seahawks overtime efforts to win the game.

It was a rusty day for most of the top defensive stars, aside from Keion White, who had another impressive day. From the miscommunication between Kyle Dugger and Christian Gonzalez, which led to D.K. Metcalf's 56-yard touchdown, to costly penalties that gave Seattle too much yardage, it was a rough day all around.

Perhaps none rougher than the overtime defensive pass interference called on Jonathan Jones, who was covering Tyler Lockett. At best, it was an iffy call that could have been called on the receiver, too. It got the cornerback fired up and ultimately led to the Seahawks' moving into field goal range to win the game.

Because of that and the NFL officials' lack of communication, Jones had a lot to say about the call when speaking to reporters after the loss.

The cornerback revealed that once the flag was thrown and the DPI was announced, even Lockett told him it "wasn't a penalty," a sentiment shared by most Patriots players and fans.

While it's interesting to hear a player admit this despite benefitting from the call, it unfortunately doesn't change the game's result. The Patriots still lost and had plenty of opportunities to avoid that fate, and it's likely that had this penalty not been called, the Seahawks would have still marched down the field to get the win.

After looking far better than expected against the Bengals last week, the team's most concerning aspects lived up to the worry this week. Injuries are piling up, and the offensive line fell apart to create a much more difficult day for Jacoby Brissett, a recipe for disaster on a short week.
