One of the most significant changes the Patriots have undergone this offseason, other than switching out Bill Belichick for Jerod Mayo, has been having an officially unofficial separate person in charge of roster building. Eliot Wolf has taken over that role, and for the most part, has made all the right decisions regarding the team's 2024 team.

From prioritizing the offense in the draft earlier this year, selecting seven offensive players of their eight picks, extending their best players beyond the upcoming season, and adding quality depth to the defense, there's not much to complain about regarding Wolf's tenure so far.

Besides a few gaffes that fans aren't pleased with, like the trade of Matthew Judon or the lack of a solid left tackle on offense, the Patriots are in a much better place this year than last season.

He's proven not to be against handing out hefty contracts to players who deserve it or in an attempt to bring in top-quality talent to boost the team, which Belichick was often criticized for. Wolf's latest take on the forthcoming uptick in free agency surrounding roster cutdowns will be even more music to fans' ears.

Eliot Wolf's approach to the roster cutdown deadline means more excitement could be on the way

Now that the NFL only implements one roster cutdown before the start of the upcoming season, teams can hold 90 players until days before Week 1 begins. The Patriots are currently at max capacity with their roster, meaning they'll have a lot of tough decisions to make when the deadline rolls around.

However, with those decisions comes the same task for the 31 other teams in the league, creating many opportunities for those needing to add more depth to their rosters to snatch players through the waiver wire or in free agency.

That's something the Patriots plan to do and be aggressive in their efforts, according to Wolf, who will benefit from having a high spot on the waiver wire to (hopefully) add some quality players to boost their most vulnerable positons on the team.

"Yeah, absolutely. Our scouting department right now, all they’re doing is just grinding through the preseason film, watching players, talking to other teams, seeing who might become available. Having a third claim spot is a good advantage, and we’ll be aggressive, I think."

The offensive line should be the priority, and because teams will have dozens of players to cut before having the ability to move them to the practice squad, the Patriots will have a high chance of snagging the perfect player they need. Who that might be is yet to be seen, but there are plenty on the roster bubble to watch for that could be a great acquisition.

Based on how Wolf has already approached free agency, it's fair to assume he's right about their likely aggressive approach. With a high spot on the wire and some big holes needing to be dealt with before the season begins, there's hope that some good players could make their way to New England.
