For most of, if not all, of his career, Bill Belichick has been widely regarded as a media hater.

From his one-word press conferences to his rude retorts toward reporter questions, he has never been one to want to show his personality in front of the cameras. "We're focused on the next opponent," or something similar, was a common phrase Belichick would say to reporters regarding any question he felt didn't warrant a response—which was a lot of them.

The low-mumbled, nonverbal responses to the media's questions left a sour taste in many football fans' mouths. It came off as if he thought he was better than everyone else, almost as if the questions being asked weren't worth his time. It felt like a potential post-coaching media gig would be a long shot, even with the football knowledge.

No network was going to want to bring in a guy who severely lacks personality and pizazz solely for football acumen. The segment would feel like a lecture.

But then, something crazy happened. Thursday, April 25, 2024, the first night of the NFL draft, changed everything we know as football fans. (I liken it to the scene in How the Grinch Stole Christmas when the Grinch finds acceptance and embraces the Who's friendship, but I digress). Bill Belichick put on a stellar media performance at the NFL draft on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday night.

Billy B was slinging his NFL knowledge around like a frisbee on a college campus. Watching him break down prospects and their respective film live on television was a sight to be seen. A man who seemingly had no personality stole the show. While he did have some petty takes, we're looking at his instant analysis of Drake Maye, for most of the night, he crushed his appearance on the PMS draft coverage.

Watching Bill talk shop with other football heads was a fascinating watch. I don't want to get too ahead of myself here, but it almost looked like he was having fun being on the broadcast. Pat McAfee tends to bring out the best in his guests with his humor-informative show on ESPN, and it seems like he did it again with Belichick.

Heck, Bill was having so much fun that, in a moment that I can only describe as a shock, he asked Pat if he could join the show in the fall and be a regular. It led to this hilarious exchange below between McAfee and Belichick, which provided NFL fans with a taste of the incredible football knowledge and content that could be coming their way this upcoming football season.

The man loves football. You can hear it when he talks. The Pat McAfee Show didn't just bring him in to be a name. They brought him in for his candor and his draft analysis. In a time when most draft coverage praises every pick, Belichick brought raw, unfiltered analysis. He spoke about each prospect as if he were still making the draft day decisions for his franchise.

This is the type of content we've been waiting for from Belichick. It turns out he's been saving all of his personality for his post-coaching career. For me, Belichick was the one who asked Pat to be on his show, not the other way around. I think that speaks volumes about what Belichick has to offer regarding his media career.

So get ready for the fall, folks. It looks like Bill Belichick will be a regular on The Pat McAfee Show and I am here for it!
