Despite having some of the most cap space to utilize in free agency this past offseason, the Patriots didn't spend much or sign players that garnered much excitement from the fans. It was an underwhelming start to the Jerod Mayo era, which had high expectations given how much the roster needed improving.

The preseason didn't help much to bring more optimism about the free agents they did sign, especially offensively. However, one player who was signed to be a core special teamer and a solid depth piece on defense stood out and was well on his way to being one of the better signings of the offseason.

Oshane Ximines flashed during the preseason and looked like he could become an under-the-radar part of the new Patriots roster. With an emphasis on improving the special teams from their uncharacteristically down season, it was a perfect opportunity for Ximines to secure an integral role this season.

Unfortunately, an injury has prevented him from playing another game with the team so far, and the latest news reveals that he won't have that chance for the remainder of the season.

Patriots lose special teams and defensive standout for the remainder of the 2024 season

In his weekly Sunday notes article, ESPN's Mike Reiss shared that Ximines was diagnosed with a torn ACL this past week from an injury sustained in the Patriots Week 2 game against the Seahawks.

Because of that, he will miss the rest of the 2024 season, which is a significant loss for the defense and special teams, as he looked to be exactly what the roster needed.

"Reserve outside linebacker and core special-teamer Oshane Ximines, whom veteran cornerback Jonathan Jones had predicted would be a surprise performer this season, was diagnosed with a torn ACL after he was injured on a Week 2 play in punt coverage, according to a team source.

Thus, Ximines' timeline for recovery won't have him returning to the team this season. The current plan is to wait for swelling to subside before scheduling surgery."

It's an unfortunate development for a roster dealing with a long list of new injuries suffered during the blowout loss to the 49ers on Sunday, with David Andrews, Kyle Dugger, and Caedan Wallace exiting the game early.

Hopefully, we won't receive the worst news possible about any of them.
