4 potential breakout stars on the Patriots for the 2023 season
Mike Gesicki
An under-the-radar free agent signing that left many unexcited, Mike Gesicki won fans and the media over with his standout performances this summer.
His arrival in New England has reignited the hope of finally having the dynamic tight end duo that many fans have longed for since the days of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. The pairing of Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith didn't work the way anyone hoped, so the addition of Gesicki's familiar skillset may be the change that was needed.
It already appears that Gesicki has solidified a role within the reworked offense under Bill O'Brien, who is very familiar with the Penn State alum. His presence alone creates mismatches on the field when lined up with Henry, and his usage as a jumbo receiver will become vital for Mac Jones, particularly in the red zone.
On top of that, O'Brien is known for his favorable usage of double tight ends and was the offensive coordinator during that memorable 2011 season.
It's clear the intention is to recreate that production as much as possible with who they have in the tight end room now, and Gesicki may become the go-to scorer for Jones this season, much like Henry was in 2021.
