Roster battles are always one of the most exciting aspects of any training camp, and the Patriots will have several to pay close attention to this summer. It's not a luxury they've had much of over the last few years, especially on offense. But that will be one of their strengths leading up to Week 1, with the wide receiver competition being amongst the most captivating.
The team currently rosters 12 receivers with only a few easily deemed locks for the 2025 season: Stefon Diggs, Mack Hollins, and rookie Kyle Williams. There are arguments to be made for a few other players, like Kendrick Bourne and DeMario Douglas, but all are far from a secure spot on the team.
That's even more apparent when looking at how the spring went with the rise of UDFA receiver Efton Chism III. The 23-year-old was one of the most talked-about players during OTAs and minicamp, and for good reason, as he consistently impressed his teammates and fans.
His rise to the roster is projected to continue throughout training camp and the preseason, so much so that in the latest roster prediction, Chism makes the cut, while other notable names do not.
Patriots could continue their UDFA streak if Efton Chism III makes the roster cut
With only three players widely considered locks for the Patriots' 2025 roster, it's easy to speculate about who else might make the cut, especially when history shows Josh McDaniels is keen on keeping up to nine wideouts on the team.
That has led some analysts and fans to suggest Chism be one of the lucky ones to make the final 53-man roster, as his rise over the last few months would make him a risky practice squad addition since he would be able to sign with another team at any time.
The Patriots avoid that possibility in Jordy McElroy of Patriots Wire's latest roster prediction, as he has Chism making the team over players like Javon Baker and Ja'Lynn Polk, both of whom were 2024 draft picks. Because the new regime has no ties to them and those who do are no longer around, it wouldn't be outlandish to consider Chism makes the team over them.
It would be a massive leap of faith to choose a rookie undrafted player over two others who have, at the very least, one year of experience in the league, even if their rookie seasons were far from memorable in any sort of good day. And it would show just how impressive Chism has been and could be, especially in an offense that is known for utilizing a smaller slot receiver.
It could be enough of a reason for McDaniels to be keen on keeping him around, and he could become the Patriots' secret offensive weapon, immediately boosting the impact of what Drake Maye could do in year two.
