The New England Patriots were crowned AFC East champions last season after posting a 14-3 record and a 5-1 divisional performance. They've no doubt made strides to address their playoff shortcomings, but the NFL Draft is yet another opportunity to improve their roster ahead of another pivotal season.
While New England has no qualms about the future of their head coach or quarterback, that isn't a luxury other AFC East teams have. Joe Brady was hired to be the Bills' next head coach earlier this offseason, while Aaron Glenn's disastrous first season in New York is already seeing his seat begin to heat up.
In a recent article from Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport, the Bills and Jets are named as two of eight teams under the most pressure to crush Thursday's draft.
Patriots rivals need to crush the 2026 NFL Draft or risk falling further behind
The Bills won 12 games last year, but a divisional-round playoff exit left stars like Josh Allen and Dion Dawkins in tears during the postgame interviews. Allen had four turnovers against the Broncos, one of which was a puzzling lateral at the end of the first half that directly led to a Broncos field goal. Denver would win by three in overtime.
The elimination led to Sean McDermott, while the Bills looked to beef up the roster around Allen this offseason. They traded for DJ Moore and re-signed Connor McGovern on offense, while they added Bradley Chubb, Dee Alford, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson on defense.
While their offseason wasn't bad by any means, they need to continue to add talent to reclaim the crown from New England. Mock drafts have seen them focus on wide receiver and the front seven as of late.
Texas A&M's KC Concepcion and Washington's Denzel Boston are both very possible selections if they want to add a receiver, while Clemson's Peter Woods or Auburn's Keldric Faulk could help them add to their pass rush.
The Jets need to get back on track with a top draft in 2026
The Jets made an effort to improve their squad in the short term this offseason, adding older veterans like Geno Smith, David Onyemata, and Demario Davis.
This is likely a function of Aaron Glenn's being on the hot seat, but these players also offer bridge options as they look to transition young players and rookies from this year's class into larger roles in the future.
Aside from the Jets generally needing significant reinforcements, a home-run draft is also key due to their high-quality picks. New York has the 2nd, 16th, 33rd, and 44th pick. They're the only team in this year's draft that can say they have the rights to four top 50 selections.
David Bailey has been reported to be the favorite for the Jets' selection at No. 2, but Ohio State's Arvell Reese is also a possibility. Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman, Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, and a wide receiver have been popular mocks to the Jets at No. 16. At 33 and 44, they have the chance to make further upgrades.
For different reasons, both the Bills and Jets need to have excellent drafts this season. For the Bills, reclaiming the AFC East crown they held for over half a decade will be the priority in 2026, while Glenn's Jets will need to show significant improvement, which may come from their exceptional draft pick value.
Thursday will be a pivotal day, not only for the Super Bowl-hopeful Patriots but also the rest of the AFC East.
