The Patriots have made their 2025 offseason an impressive one, with the additions of high-priced free agents like Milton Williams, Carlton Davis, and Robert Spillane, the team has made its presence felt.
Through the draft, the team added a crop of eleven more players to add some juice to the squad. Nonetheless, additions post-draft aren't a bad idea, especially when some solid free agents are still on the open market.
The Patriots still have some solid free agents options to sign ahead of crucial 2025 season
Quarterback: C.J. Beathard
With Drake Maye and Josh Dobbs locks to make the roster in 2025, any additions to the room would fill the QB3 role. Louisiana UDFA Ben Wooldridge currently occupies that slot, but adding another veteran arm could be wise.
In the event of an injury to Dobbs, relying on a UDFA as the only alternative to Maye is risky. Beathard has experience as a backup and has 13 career starts to his name.
Running Back: Ameer Abdullah
Abdullah spent time with Josh McDaniels when he was the head coach of the Raiders and has been a successful receiver out of the backfield during his career. At almost 32, it would be a short-term add, but a sensible one that could take the reins as a third-down back immediately and effectively if need be.
With TreyVeon Henderson, Terrell Jennings, and Lan Larison all as developmental options, a more experienced player could serve the team well.
Tight End: Hayden Hurst
Hurst has been a bit dissapointing since entering the league as a first round pick, but is still a strong blocker and capable receiver in a complimentary role. The team already has a plethora of players at the position, and Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper are a productive duo. Hurst would be a nice add, but a bit of an unnecessary one in my eyes.
Offensive Line: Jedrick Wills Jr.
Wills spent time with Vrabel last year during his time as an associate in Cleveland. After a slow three years, Wills struggled in 2024. In just 245 snaps, he was penalized seven times and allowed a further three sacks. It's been rumored that Wills may take a year off of football, but he could be a worthwhile flier the team could move to guard as a project for Doug Marrone.
Mekhi Becton, who was selected one pick after Wills in 2020, reinvented himself as a guard in Philadelphia, and maybe Wills could have a similar resurrection.
Interior Defensive Line: Raekwon Davis
The IDL is maybe in the best spot out of any position on the team, so any addition would certainly be surplus. Davis struggled immensely in 2024, but was a solid player for Miami in years past. He may be more of a practice squad candidate with this defensive line group, but nonetheless could be a worthwhile depth addition.
Edge Defender: Za'Darius Smith
Smith was sent to Detroit midseason in a trade with Cleveland, and with Terrell Williams now in charge of the defense, Smith could help bolster the Lions pass rush. He totaled nine sacks across the year, with four for the Lions. Harold Landry and Anfernee Jennings are sound, but adding another QB hunter is never a bad idea.
Linebacker: Chance Campbell
Linebacker likely doesn't need another addition, but Campbell is a good candidate if the team wants to add someone. A former Ole Miss Rebel, Campbell was a sixth-round pick by Vrabel's Titans. He'd be the third former Titan (Jack Gibbens, Monty Rice) who would be added to the position.
Cornerback: Mike Hilton
Hilton is an experienced slot corner and former Patriot - he spent eight days on the team's practice squad in 2016. Marcus Jones has struggled as a CB2 when asked to play the role, so adding a tad more insurance behind Christian Gonzalez (20 career games) and Carlton Davis (has never played a full season) could be wise. Hilton's zone acumen could give him safety flexibility, too.
Safety: Quandre Diggs
The Patriots lack deep safeties, and Diggs has experience in that role. 75% of his defensive snaps last season came from deep, and with Jabrill Peppers and Kyle Dugger as box safeties, he would complement them well. Dell Pettus played well as a rookie, but Diggs could be a nice bridge before he potentially takes the starting job in 2026.
