After watching the Patriots succeed during the 2025 season, it was clear that one thing would remain true throughout the offseason: the defense would be the better part of the roster, especially if they added more pieces in free agency and the draft.
Although it would be fair to argue that they didn't add enough players to address the more questionable parts of the defense, those they did sign have already made a strong impression, particularly Dre'Mont Jones, who was brought in to replace K'Lavon Chaisson.
As it stands, it's difficult to say if the veteran is going to make the kind of impact on the pass rush that many were hoping for. The defense appeared to be lacking, but he has stood out for all the right reasons so far and is also helping some of his new teammates reach the next level, most notably Elijah Ponder.
The 23-year-old joined the Patriots as an undrafted free agent last year, and although he never started a game, he still showed a lot of potential in the 15 games he took the field for by recording 24 combined tackles, four for a loss, five quarterback hits, two fumble recoveries, and four sacks.
It was clear then that he had a promising future and, with the right kind of coaching, he could become an integral part of their defensive identity. Through training camp so far, he has built upon that and has had his teammates raving about everything from his football knowledge to his natural abilities.
There's a good chance that the Patriots have a hidden defensive gem ready to make the impact they need in 2026
Jones is the most recent to hype up his new teammate, emphasizing just how good Ponder's awareness is after a training camp practice last week.
He went so far as to say that Ponder could be a "steal," and, considering the Patriots' history with UDFAs, he could easily become the next overlooked player to play a major role in their success moving forward.

Based on the current state of the pass-rushing roster, it would be a blessing for the Patriots to stumble upon a superstar-in-the-making already on the roster instead of having to trade for one ahead of this season's deadline.
There are ongoing concerns that they didn't make enough adjustments to the defensive line to have the kind of impact they need, especially since Harold Landry is on the PUP list to start training camp. He is expected to be their starter again this season.
Beyond the linebacker, the rest of the pass rushers are more question marks than anything solid, so if Ponder rises to the occasion, then they're in luck.
If he can continue to perform at a high level the rest of the offseason, he might earn a starting role on the team and show just how badly he was overlooked after the draft. It would be a dream come true for a team that has struggled to find a playmaker since Matthew Judon was traded.
Otherwise, they'll have to look at available free agents, including Judon, and consider bringing one in. If not, they're risking a major setback that could affect whether they win or lose important games this fall.
