The New England Patriots needed to shore up the edge position in the offseason. In free agency, they lost a solid pass rusher, K'Lavon Chaisson, and chose to sign Dre'Mont Jones instead, who many analysts believe is a lateral move, if not a downgrade.
In addition to adding Jones, the team not only expended a second-round pick on Illinois pass-rusher Gabe Jacas but also traded up for the privilege. That hasn't worked out at all. Fortunately, the team has second-year player Elijah Ponder on hand, and he's getting solid reviews.
It's a good thing he is. The expectations for the mentioned Jacas were sky-high, but the return has been zilch. Jacas has been a no-show at OTAs, and concerns are rampant that his injury status may be a problem, as is his contractual status.
Jacas' status, plus the injury issues that the other edge starter, Harold Landry III, has experienced, leave the Patriots thin at the edge position, even if Jacas does suddenly make an appearance. The situation behooves the team to add to the position now.
Elijah Ponder may be the Patriots' best friend on the edge in 2026
While there are some intriguing free agents who could solve the defense's weakness, there is hype growing around Ponder, and things are looking up for the 6'3", 260-pound outside linebacker.
Boston Sports Journal's Greg Bedard recently commented that the team likes what they see from second-year edge and what that could mean for this upcoming season.
Did the #Patriots find a hidden gem in Elijah Ponder? 🤔

“The headliner from my discussions with people around the team is they love Elijah Ponder…Even if you have high expectations for Gabe Jacas at this point and it was probably gonna be this way no matter what. He [Jacas] is… pic.twitter.com/RzFeiXgbrU
The 23-year-old was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2025 and made the most of his opportunity. He played in 15 games for the Patriots and racked up 24 total stops. But more impactful were his four sacks, a commodity in short supply for New England, and he also added two fumble recoveries to his 2025 stats.
If Ponder can use his 2025 experience to leap to the next level, it will be a huge boost to the Patriots' defense, especially with Jacas' status totally up in the air.
The Patriots had two overarching imperatives in the 2026 offseason. They needed to shore up their offensive line, which gave up sacks by the dozens.
The other mandate was to shore up the edge with pass-rushers who produce. Ponder will help, but overall, they've failed to add enough. There's still time to upgrade the unit before the season starts. But if they don't, expect opposing quarterbacks to have a field day.
