Don't let the New England Patriots' Super Bowl run fool you. This is not a complete roster. Clearly, general manager Eliot Wolfe knows it. He's been active early in free agency, making a few key moves to fill the team's biggest areas of need.
The Pats' latest signing may be their most impactful move of the offseason. Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, New England has agreed to terms with former Green Bay Packers wideout Romeo Doubs on a four-year deal worth $70 million.
The move gives Drake Maye the top wideout he was missing and sets the Patriots' offense up to continue its run of dominance.
Romeo Doubs and Drake Maye form the perfect Patriots duo
The Patriots already had some interesting players in their wide receiver room. Kayshon Boutte has developed into a solid deep threat. Mack Hollins is a nice utility player. DeMario Douglas and Kyle Williams both bring some explosiveness to the table.
But New England still didn't have a reliable top target. When third down and long came around, Maye didn't have a receiver he could trust to get open.
This move solves that issue. Doubs may not have been the most productive receiver in 2025 (his 724 receiving yards aren't raising any eyebrows), but he was limited by a crowded receiver room in Green Bay. Now, he'll be able to step into a more dominant role.
A closer look at the receiver's stats gives a more complete view of his impact. Per PFF, quarterbacks had an NFL Passer Rating of 115.9 when targeting him last season. He's had over 1.6 yards per route run in each of the last three years. Doubs is an efficient, reliable pass catcher with plenty of room to grow.
Still just 25 years old, the former Packers star will be able to grow alongside Maye in Josh McDaniels' offense. The four-year deal gives New England a sense of security at the position it has been lacking for years.
The price tag may feel steep initially, but when compared to the deals that other receivers have agreed to early in free agency, this contract looks like a bargain. At just $17.5 million per year, Doubs will be making considerably less than most top receivers.
Maye has his top wideout. Wolfe's work this offseason isn't quite finished, but he's off to an excellent start. If these signings can gel quickly, the Patriots could be poised to take another step forward in 2026.
