Patriots' next trade after acquiring A.J. Brown couldn't be more obvious now

Any talk of a trade for the Patriots this offseason has solely focused on wide receiver A.J. Brown and virtually nobody else, and although it makes a lot of sense, it has seemingly negated all of the other possibilities that could improve their team for the upcoming season, including a move for a superstar defender.

Engaging in a conversation with the Giants about defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux has been brought up over the last few months, but any proposal for a trade hasn't been taken too seriously, especially once the move for Brown became more likely.

That doesn't mean another trade can't happen, and with so much speculation about the Giants making their star available, there's no reason for the Patriots not to inquire. They have even more reason to if the latest proposed trade could actually get a deal done, as it feels like an absolute steal.

A new trade proposal gives the Patriots a star EDGE their defense needs

While discussing potential trade offers teams around the league can make for some of the presumed available top stars, ESPN's Dan Graziano suggested that the Patriots send the Giants a 2027 fifth-round pick for Thibodeaux to elevate their pass rush to a new degree.

That feels like a digestible price for a player like Thibodeaux, who hasn't had the opportunity to fully thrive in New York over the last few years, with his last double-digit sack season coming in 2023.

"The Patriots still need edge help, have an extra fifth-rounder from the Garrett Bradbury trade and likely won't have a ton of valuable draft capital after the A.J. Brown deal.

Former Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen is now on Mike Vrabel's defensive staff in New England, though things didn't go great in New York and I don't know whether that makes it more or less likely they'd be interested in Thibodeaux."

He might not be Myles Garrett (who is?), but Thibodeaux could fill a void on the Patriots' current defensive line and help elevate the group to a new level for a very telling 2026 season.

We've seen what he can do on the field when things are going well, but it would be fair to say things in New York have been chaotic since he was drafted four years ago.

A revolving door of head coaches, quarterbacks, and defensive coordinators certainly doesn't help make a superstar, but the right place, at the right time, can, and the Patriots could be just that for Thibodeaux.

At just 25 years old, his best years are ahead of him, and if the Patriots only have to invest a mid-round pick to get him on the roster, what would prevent them from getting a deal done? He could immediately become another cornerstone of their defense, and that's exactly what they need right now.

Analysts have already said that they believe the Patriots will be trading more players before this year's deadline, so they'll surely recoup a mid-round pick for the one they'd give up for Thibodeaux, so that shouldn't prevent them from making the call.

They put in the effort to upgrade the offense with A.J. Brown, now it's time to shift that focus to the defense and upgrade that group to the next level.
