The Patriots' Mike Vrabel had a massive undertaking on his hands when he accepted the job of the Patriots' Head Coach and more in January of 2025. He knew full well he had to engineer a more than challenging reconstruction of a roster and team that had lost its way.
As a highly confident and experienced NFL leader with six years of head coaching experience and involvement in personnel decision-making, Vrabel couldn't have been more prepared. He's an established professional with exceptional credentials, including being named the 2021 NFL Coach of the Year.
With that experience in hand, Vrabel set about to remake a lackluster Patriots roster with his priorities in mind. His top priority was to add playmakers to both his offense and defense. Neither made many in 2024. Big plays by playmakers win games. It's not rocket science. Without them, you are 4-13.
Mike Vrabel signed linebacker Robert Spillane, one of his best 2025 acquisitions
Vrabel began that job in free agency, and one of his best signings was former Las Vegas Raider inside linebacker Robert Spillane. It was an astute signing and set an excellent tone for the 2025 Patriots' defense. Spillane is a no-nonsense, super energetic linebacker who's already made his leadership presence felt with teammates.

Having Spillane super-committed is an excellent sign both for Vrabel and the 2025 Patriots. Spillane is a trend-setter. His buy-in will go a long way toward not only energizing his defensive teammates but also the entire team.
Why Robert Spillane is a key to the Patriots' 2025 success
NFL teams, like any others, need leadership to reach their full potential. Spillane is a leader, and his position on the second level of the defense is a great place to be situated. He'll more than likely call the defense and set the tone for everyone else on the defense.
In addition, he won't be just a figurehead; he'll lead by example. Spillane is a sideline-to-sideline linebacker who'll never quit on a play. He'll set a great example for the young players and all the other defenders. Those who don't adopt that attitude will find themselves on the other end of his vitriol and/or benched by Vrabel.
Mike Vrabel unsurprisingly cut ties with several veterans who were mainstays on the defense for various reasons. Gone are Davon Godchaux, Deatrich Wise Jr., Ja'Whaun Bentley (a captain), and Jonathan Jones. All were multi-year Patriot defensive starters. No matter. This is Mike Vrabel's team now.
Vrabel is assembling a team that will play with the commitment and intensity that he did. Robert Spillane epitomizes that football demeanor. Expect him to be named a captain. It will be a surprise if he's not. Spillane is the embodiment of the type of football player Mike Vrabel wants on his team. If you have enough of them, you are a playoff team and more.
