Patriots' need for veteran backup should still keep them away from longtime starter

Since the Patriots decided to release quarterback Joshua Dobbs, there has been a lot of speculation about whether they will add another veteran to the QB room as backup Drake Maye and be a more reliable option than Tommy DeVito.

So far, they look content with who they have, even adding rookie Behren Morton in the sixth round of last month's draft. And although they have made it clear they want to have a young group under center, it might be wise to add a more experienced voice to the locker room, which has Zach Bachar of Bleacher Report suggesting two names to be on their radar.

Because they remain unsigned heading into the summer, Jimmy Garoppolo and Russell Wilson are being floated as potential targets for a team like the Patriots, which is viewed as an ideal landing spot.

Given Garoppolo's experience with the franchise, most notably with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, he would make a lot of sense. But Wilson, who hasn't been all that impressive since he was released by the Seahawks, is a bit more questionable.

Patriots might want to consider adding a veteran QB to the roster - but not Russell Wilson

If signing a veteran is something the Patriots might consider, there are certainly better options than Wilson, even if he has an impressive background with a Super Bowl win under his belt.

While Garoppolo isn't a vastly better player, his familiarity with the system and willingness to be a backup are a much better fit for what New England is looking for, and that immediately makes him more desirable than Wilson.

From what we've seen and heard, the longtime Seahawks quarterback still wants a chance to be a starter, and that's not going to happen in Foxboro.

Clearly, he would know that if he decided to sign with the team, but it's still a lingering issue that could become a problem down the line, particularly if Maye struggles early as some analysts predict.

And although his intel would be valuable for a young player like Maye, Wilson hasn't been performing at a level that would benefit the Patriots in a disastrous scenario. He would seemingly become more of a liability than a help on the field, and that defeats the purpose of signing a veteran quarterback to begin with.

Based on how the team has conducted the offseason so far, it's probably safe to assume that neither Garoppolo nor Wilson will end up in New England, particularly Wilson, so this won't be relevant anyway.

However, the idea of adding a veteran shouldn't be off the table, and even though they haven't talked about doing that much this offseason, it should be something they seriously consider as the season nears.
