The Patriots are set to officially begin training camp this week, with rookies already reporting as of this past weekend. It is expected that there will be even more eyes on this year's summer practices than in the past, thanks to Mike Vrabel and the massively improved roster.
Aside from watching the progress of second-year quarterback Drake Maye, there is a special excitement surrounding Stefon Diggs, as the receiver was unexpectedly signed in free agency to become the quarterback's top wide receiver. There was an initial mixed reaction to the signing, as he had torn his ACL just eight months prior.
However, the latest update regarding his status for training camp suggests that he will not begin his tenure with the Patriots on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list, as many had anticipated, which is significant news for the offense moving forward.

This represents a significant shift from how he spent his spring practices. Diggs was present for OTAs and minicamp but was unable to suit up and practice extensively due to his knee rehab. That doesn't appear to be in his future, allowing the connection between him and Maye to start immediately.
The Patriots receive a major break with Stefon Diggs able to fully participate in training camp
There has been plenty of speculation over the last several months, resulting in conflicting reports in the days leading up to Patriots training camp. Just last week, some analysts suggested Diggs would begin the regular season on the PUP list, meaning he would have to miss at least the first four games, which could force them into a desperate situation for a receiver.
However, the latest news from ESPN's Mike Reiss suggests that won't be the case, despite the risk associated with signing Diggs, and he could be ready to go as soon as Week 1.
It's remarkable, considering that recovering from an ACL injury typically ranges from 9 to 12 months, and we're only at the eight-month mark with Diggs. He has shown considerable strength and determination during his rehabilitation process by posting impressive training videos on his social media, motivating fans to believe he could return to the field as soon as possible.
That will be a massive plus for Maye and a significant stress off the backs of the head coaches, as some analysts felt they would need to pull off a blockbuster trade for a wide receiver if Diggs were set to miss several games.
While a trade could still inevitably happen, especially if a player like Terry McLaurin becomes available, it won't need to be done to fill the void left in Diggs' absence, making a potential trade that much sweeter.
