For the better part of the past three decades, the New England Patriots have owned the AFC East. However, Josh Allen's rise has made the Buffalo Bills a force to be reckoned with in the division. The Bills had won five consecutive division titles prior to the Patriots' 2025 breakthrough.
That's why watching the Bills' front office make the same mistake over and over can only bring joy to Patriots fans. Not even hiring an offensive-minded coach like Joe Brady was enough for them to get out of their own way.
As FanSided's Jake Beckman pointed out, Buffalo's first big move of the Brady era could end up costing the Bills a Super Bowl trip. Once again, they failed to surround their superstar quarterback with enough weapons.
"So obviously, now that Brady is running the show, he opted to get Allen multiple good WRs, right? Wrong," Beckman wrote. "Their offensive move this offseason was trading a second-round pick for a 29-year-old D.J. Moore… and that’s it."
Buffalo's D.J. Moore gamble hasn’t changed the problem Patriots fans saw coming
Despite having one of the top-five quarterbacks in the game, the Bills refuse to give Allen more than a single playmaking wide receiver. Moore is no Stefon Diggs, and while he will be an obvious upgrade over Keon Coleman, he wound up being cast off by Chicago for youngsters like Rome Odunze and Luther Burden.
Since Allen became the starter, the Bills have had Zay Jones, Diggs, and Khalil Shakir led the team in receiving. That's simply not good enough.
Of course, Mike Vrabel and company won't complain one bit about that. They just have to focus on keeping James Cook in check and double-teaming Moore, knowing that Allen will ultimately have to put his Superman cape on, as usual.
New England must be wary of making the same mistake as its top divisional rival. The Patriots didn't have a ton of talent in the wide receiver room during Drake Maye's rookie season, and they only adding Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins last year in free agency. This season, they should be looking to add another veteran weapon besides Romeo Doubs to put Maye in a position to succeed.
Regardless of Allen's prowess and the Bills' recent success, the Patriots should once again be the team to beat in the AFC East. And with a Bills front office that keeps shooting itself in the foot and failing arguably the greatest player in franchise history, that's not likely to change any time soon.
