Stefon Diggs’ next stop could revive his career after Patriots exit

He's not done yet.

The New England Patriots knew what they were getting into with Stefon Diggs, which is why they structured his free agent deal in 2025 so they could move on from him after one year. Given his off-the-field issues, it wasn't much of a surprise to see the team do just that early in the offseason.

Although he wasn't the same playmaking possession receiver he was in his Buffalo Bills heyday, Diggs was efficient and productive more often than not for the Patriots.

Considering that, Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus believes a wide receiver-needy team will give him another shot. He recently called Diggs a perfect fit for the Washington Commanders.

"Diggs will now play on his fourth squad in four years, but he’s been a remarkably consistent playmaker when healthy," Locker wrote. "With Terry McLaurin and Luke McCaffrey both appearing on under 500 snaps in 2025, Daniels would benefit from Diggs’ inside-outside skillset to lift the Commanders’ beleaguered group."

The Commanders could be the perfect landing spot for Stefon Diggs

Diggs was coming off a major knee injury last season, but even at 32, he bounced back nicely and showed that he still had plenty left in the tank. As Drake Maye's primary target, he hauled in 85 receptions on 102 targets for 1,013 yards, all team highs, and added four touchdowns.

Per PFF, he posted the fourth-highest receiver grade (82.6) of his career, all while hauling in 75 percent of his contested catches and dropping just 2.9 percent of his targets.

Diggs' ability to line up out wide and in the slot could also come in handy for a Commanders offense that lacks proven depth behind Terry McLaurin. Washington selected Clemson wideout Antonio Williams in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. They also have third-year pro Luke McCaffrey in the mix, but he only has 29 career receptions. Diggs could be the missing piece, and his versatility would allow new offensive coordinator David Blough to get creative.

As much as the Patriots said all the right things about his work ethic and demeanor, Diggs has a history with non-football-related issues, and he was facing serious accusations off the field at the time of his release.

New England could technically still welcome Diggs back after signing Romeo Doubs, but all the trade buzz surrounding the Patriots and A.J. Brown would likely complicate things. As things stand, his next opportunity could end up being his last in the NFL.
