Numerous naysayers are predicting dire results for the 2026 New England Patriots season. Yet, the team will get its two most important players back healthy from injury. MVP-caliber quarterback Drake Maye and offensive line linchpin, left tackle Will Campbell, will return.
Also, should the long-anticipated trade for No. 1 receiver, A.J. Brown, materialize, the receiving corps will get a huge boost. That single move is viewed by Bleacher's Report's Brad Gagnon as the main contributor to a "potential dream 2026 season" for New England.
On the plus side, the team added to the offensive line with top draft pick Caleb Lomu, providing superb depth for both tackle positions.
His position versatility is a massive asset to Mike Vrabel's squad. In addition, they did add a solid sack-producing edge in second-round draft pick Gabe Jacas. He'll be a third edge after Harold Landry III and free agent signee Dre'Mont Jones. He's a major depth piece at a position that was lacking in 2025, and then lost K'Lavon Chaisson to free agency.
Of course, the mentioned Drake Maye is the wild card in any and every discussion of the Patriots' 2026 season. The young prodigy led a mediocre 2025 team to the Super Bowl in just his second season. Only an arm injury and the injury to left tackle Will Campbell prevented Maye from having a better outing against Seattle and maybe even leading the Patriots to a seventh Lombardi trophy.
Another Super Bowl run would be a dream 2026 season for the Patriots
Thinking of another Patriots' Super Bowl run in 2026, in light of their much more difficult schedule and the team's lackluster offseason, would certainly be a dream. Regardless, one analyst has suggested that dream and has pointed out a specific reason why it could happen.
Gagnon summed up New England's dream season in just one sentence, and it's difficult to argue against it.
"A young and talented team completes a trade for veteran star A.J. Brown and takes another step forward with a second Super Bowl run in a row."
While Gagnon's article is limited in his trying to boil down a season's potential to one sentence, the addition he suggests could certainly be a massive asset to the Patriots. Should the long-anticipated trade for Eagles No. 1 receiver, A.J. Brown, finally become reality, it will be a major game-changing and potentially season-changing event.
The Patriots got a solid 2025 season from former Pro-Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs, but have moved on from him. Like Diggs, the soon-to-be 29-year-old Brown is a former Pro Bowler and had more than 1,000 receiving yards in 2025. He notched 78 catches for 1003 yards and seven touchdowns for the Eagles last season.
Brown will be the Patriots' best receiver since Julian Edelman's retirement after the 2020 season. He, along with free agent signee Romeo Doubs, provides a better one-two punch than last season's Diggs and Kayshon Boutte, who may be traded this offseason.
The thought of Maye throwing to Brown is indeed a dream scenario. Yet other factors at work will be central to the offense's success.
The whole offensive structure depends on the big guys up front. In 2025, the O-line was porous. Four of the five starters will return, though one, Jared Wilson, moves over from left guard to center. The only addition will be Alijah Vera-Tucker, who's been injury-prone in his five-year NFL career and didn't play a snap in 2025.
Yet, if somehow clean pockets can become more of the norm than the exception, the brilliant Maye, the NFL's best passer, and Brown will be a devastating combination.
Adding left tackle Lomu, who can back up both Campbell, who was injured in 2025, and 35-year-old right tackle Morgan Moses, was arguably the Patriots' best move of the entire offseason.
There was no depth behind the two starters in 2025, and it showed when Campbell was out and then had to play hurt. Lomu is a terrific pass-blocker who'll step right if either tackle is hurt. He should also be trained to fill in at guard in case of an injury there. He's too good a pass blocker to sit if anyone goes down.
Gagnon's simple one-sentence dream scenario is just that - a dream. Yet, his suggestion that adding A.J. Brown could be the key to a mystical "dream season" isn't. If the offensive line can improve its sack-prevention and avoid major injury, then that dream may just come true.
When you have the league's best passer and top runner at quarterback, anything is possible. Anything at all.
