Every Patriots fan has been holding their breath over the last 24 hours after hearing about superstar cornerback Christian Gonzalez exiting the first padded training camp practice early due to an apparent leg injury. Although there is still plenty of time before the season begins, concerns are at an all-time high. Losing perhaps their best defensive weapon was not what anyone wanted to hear.

No updates had been provided about Gonzalez's status or the severity of the injury until the team returned on Tuesday for their next summer practice.

Fortunately, it looks like they avoided utter disaster, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, who reported that the cornerback is said to have suffered a hamstring injury that will keep him sidelined for the time being. But it should not impact his readiness for Week 1 against the Raiders.

This is the most positive update the Patriots could possibly get after how Gonzalez looked when leaving practice on Monday. It could have been a lot worse, especially since top free agent signing Carlton Davis is yet to practice with the team.

Patriots are spared the worst case scenario with Christian Gonzalez's injury

With Mike Vrabel in charge of the team, along with an impressive coaching staff, the Patriots have been considered a potential wild card contender well before the season begins. That is solely based on the impact that the new head coach has and is expected to have on the direction of the team, as well as the noteworthy additions he has made to the team.

Among the most applaudible was signing Davis in free agency, as he was considered among the top cornerbacks available. Adding him to a secondary already led by Gonzalez, along with safeties Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers, elevates the defense to a new stratosphere.

The idea of Gonzalez potentially suffering a serious injury was an absolute nightmare scenario for New England, coming ahead of what already looks to be a promising upcoming season.

He had already been performing at a high level at practice this summer, shutting down the team's expected top offensive targets like Stefon Diggs. That's a positive sign, knowing now that he will miss some time, and hopefully, it won't be too long.

The impact of his absence would be far too great and could put the defense at risk of being dramatically easier to deal with, which would have to lead Vrabel and Co. to explore their options in free agency or a trade. That immediately brings up Stephon Gilmore into the conversation, but for now, it looks like they can hold off on adding any more talent.
