Most of the offseason so far has focused solely on the Patriots' offense, and it's understandable given the Year 3 jump Drake Maye is projected to have, along with the addition of a dominant receiver like A.J. Brown.

But there is a lot to be excited about when looking at their defense coming off their unbelievable 2025 season.

Despite losing some of their most productive players in free agency, most notably K'Lavon Chaisson and Khyiris Tonga, expectations remain high for their secondary, even more so now that Kevin Byard III has been added, and the defensive line, with Christian Barmore and Milton Williams leading the way.

Given how quickly they became one of the most dominant defensive duos last year, they are bound to be among the most hyped players going into the 2026 season. And hearing from the coaching staff over the past few weeks has only increased expectations on Barmore specifically, who has proven to be a star in the making in New England after looking close to being on his way out.

Christian Barmore is on a path to superstardom ahead of the 2026 season

Although he wasn't able to fully participate in OTAs or minicamp due to his ongoing medical condition, Barmore has impressed with his work ethic this spring, and his coaches have raved about him as a result.

Newly named defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr emphasized Barmore's attitude shift and desire to learn over the past few months, which we can only assume will be shown once he is able to fully go this fall.

“He’s done a great job from last year to this spring. He’s come in this spring with a great attitude to improve and want to get better. He’s been a lot more active in the meetings. He’s just been really locked in. I believe some team success maybe ignited that, but also I think he truly wants to see how far he can go because he’s extremely talented. I’m excited to see where his potential goes to.”

That same enthusiasm is felt by defensive line coach Clinton McMillan, who shared that he continues to remind Barmore just how good he was last season and that much of the defense's success was due to his efforts.

“Throughout the course of the year, he had massive improvement and was a huge part of us playing good defense. I tell him all the time, we would not have ended up where we were if he didn’t play well. So, excited for him to get a full offseason and excited to get the second year.”

Knowing that he's more focused and excited about what's to come is great for fans to hear, especially since the defense hasn't gotten as much love this offseason as the offense.

We know the defense is filled with incredible talent, including Barmore, and after what they accomplished last season, particularly in the playoffs, there's plenty of reason to believe they can continue to climb the defensive rankings and become one of the best groups in the NFL.

They were on their way to doing that last year, as they were considered a top-10 group, and this year, the expectations might be even higher. Barmore will be a significant contributor in ensuring that happens, and it'll be fun to see just how clocked in he is once the season starts.
