As the NFL Draft gets closer, there is more and more discussion about the direction the Patriots will go in with their early draft selections, with an apparent emphasis on the defensive line. It's clear they need to add an elite pass rusher, so drafting a defensive end is expected with their first-round pick.

But there is a growing sense that they might take a swing at a superstar linebacker, as reports suggest they have an interest in Texas' Trey Moore, who is projected to go in the mid-rounds. Eliot Wolf shared his belief that the incoming prospects are impressive and that they could get a good player on Day 3, which Moore fits entirely.

Tony Pauline of Essentially Sports wrote about the Patriots' interest in Moore recently, citing they have taken a strong liking to the linebacker, and based on his intel on how teams around the league view him, there's plenty for Patriots fans to get behind.

A rookie linebacker with a high ceiling is on the Patriots radar

Because New England doesn't have a high pick in the first round, they're inevitably going to miss out on some of the most coveted talent this year's class has to offer. That doesn't mean, however, that they can't get a player with a ceiling that matches one of the best players to go in the top-10.

That's what Pauline had to say about Moore, as his sources have indicated that teams view the linebacker as an "Arvell Reese-type" who can "be used in space but also wreak havoc upfield on the blitz."

Reese is ranked No. 2 on Pro Football Focus' big board and is projected in almost every mock draft to go in the top 5 picks. He is an elite athlete with all the skills of a defender that Mike Vrabel would want in his newest addition, so if Moore has similar traits, then it feels like a big win if the Patriots are able to draft him.

He had an impressive career between the University of Texas San Antonio and the University of Texas Austin, particularly in 2023 and 2024, when he recorded 80 combined tackles, 27 for a loss, 19.5 sacks, an interception, three fumble recoveries, and three forced fumbles.

That doesn't mean his 2025 season was forgettable, as he logged 35 combined tackles, five for a loss, three sacks, three passes defended, and a fumble recovery. It certainly wasn't up to par with the previous two years, but he showed exactly what kind of player he can be, and the Patriots have the staff to bring out the best in him.

His size, athleticism, and ability to provide another solid option as a pass rusher make him an intriguing fit for what the Patriots are trying to build with their defense, so he might be a player fans need to remember going into Day 3.
