For most of the offseason, the conversation surrounding the Patriots has been about whether they would successfully trade for wide receiver A.J. Brown and, once they did, what immediate impact he would have on the offense and on Drake Maye.
He is the superstar playmaker that fans have longed for since Tom Brady was still under center, and now that they finally have a clear WR1 leading the receiving corps, there is a lot of excitement building ahead of Week 1.
That inevitably means that all eyes will be on Brown once training camp begins in just a few days, and while that makes sense, there are plenty of reasons to watch another player who could have a sneaky good summer and become the breakout star the Patriots need.
Second-year receiver Kyle Williams is widely going under the radar after a quieter rookie season than most were hoping for. Because he was the Patriots' third-round pick, there were hopes that he would become an integral part of the offensive game plan right away, even with Stefon Diggs taking over the starting role.
We didn't see much of that in Year 1 under Josh McDaniels, but now that the receiver roster has had a bit of a makeover, Williams is on pace to take on a bigger role in 2026, and if that happens, the NFL is surely not going to be happy about it.
There's a good chance that the Patriots will have one of the most complete receiving corps in the NFL in 2026
Looking at the current offense, the Patriots appear better equipped to make a Super Bowl run than they were at this point last year, yet as we saw, they shocked everyone by representing the AFC against the Seahawks in Super Bowl LX.
A big reason for that this upcoming season is the additions to the wide receiver room, headlined by the trade for Brown and the free agent addition of Romeo Doubs.
That leaves a big opportunity for a player like Williams to step up and take over the WR3 role right behind them, especially since the presumed player to hold that spot, Kayshon Boutte, has been the subject of nonstop trade rumors that have only heated up as training camp nears.
Williams can take that role from Boutte quickly, regardless of whether he remains on the team, and could go on a breakout run that the Patriots would love to have and Drake Maye would appreciate.
He already showed he can be an explosive option to lean on, despite only recording 10 receptions for 209 yards and three touchdowns. But his impressive speed and ability to evade tackles are prime characteristics of what makes a solid wide receiver, and Maye is going to need that kind of help going against some of the toughest defenses in the league.
It's an opportunity that Williams will presumably take advantage of once the team returns to Foxboro this coming week, and from what we've heard from his teammates, it seems like the 23-year-old is doing all the right things to prepare for his second season.
We won't know definitively until they get back on the field, but it's clear that Williams has all the tools to be the high-caliber receiver he's already shown glimpses of, and hopefully we'll see that sooner rather than later.
