For the second straight offseason, the New England Patriots made a conscious effort to be among the biggest spenders in free agency and attack their rebuild with purpose.

Alijah Vera-Tucker, Dre'Mont Jones, and Kevin Byard were all big-time additions as the Patriots spent the 8th most of any team in free agency, just one year after spending the most. While the offensive line is a candidate for the most improved during the offseason, the wide receivers saw major changes.

The Patriots saw the position overhaul commence with the release of Stefon Diggs. Despite his tremendous regular season, he struggled in the playoffs, totaling 14 catches for 110 yards and a touchdown across four games.

As disappointing as losing a fan favorite like Diggs was, the team made sufficient upgrades at the position to the point that Bleacher Report's Moe Moton listed New England's wide receivers as one of the NFL's ten most improved position groups.

Beyond Diggs, New England's wide receivers in 2025 were far better than in years past. Kayshon Boutte found his stride as a serious threat, while Mack Hollins offered consistent rotational play as an intermediate threat between the numbers. Pop Douglas offered a spark, while Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III each came on in the second half of the year.

With all of those players still rostered, the Patriots added both A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs.

Brown offers a legitimate All-Pro-level pass catcher the team hasn't had since Rob Gronkowski, the player Josh McDaniels compared him to. Doubs will operate as a secondary option after finishing with 55 catches, 724 yards, and 6 touchdowns with Green Bay last year.

Hollins will remain with the team next season, as will Williams. Chism would need a disastrous offseason to be left off the roster, it would seem. Regarding Boutte and Douglas, there have been rumors of trading Boutte and releasing the latter.

Whether either happens remains to be seen, but it's a testament to the front office that the team can comfortably move either player, given where the team was in 2024.

I'd expect the Patriots to move at least one of the two players, but the fact that their receivers improved so much is a massive step in the right direction for a team that has historically struggled to find quality receivers.
