Although the Patriots have needed to get a top-caliber wide receiver for their offense for years and have had the means to do so in the past, they look primed and ready to accomplish that this offseason with a league-high cap space and a new head coach with a nearly impeccable reputation.
All of that creates a lot of opportunity to get a player with the needed talent in the door, whether it be through free agency or trade, with several names already being put into the conversation as potential future Patriots. With a quarterback under center and a trusted head coach on the sideline, New England is a far more desirable place to go now, which couldn't be happening at a better time.
It was clear they weren't a place players wanted to sign with last year, making it difficult for Jerod Mayo and Co. to make the moves necessary to really make the roster what it needed to be.
That shouldn't be a problem this offseason, but they are essentially eliminated from signing at least one player set to likely be cut this offseason, which is not a great start for a team in the Patriots' shoes.
The Jets moving on from Aaron Rodgers likely means Davante Adams will be out, too
Because the new regime leading the Jets have already decided they won't retain Aaron Rodgers for another season, that leaves the future of Davante Adams in the air. They mainly traded for the wide receiver to reunite him with his longtime quarterback from Green Bay, so it's easy to assume he won't want to remain in New York if Rodgers is gone.
The easiest way for the Jets to address the situation is to cut Adams and save the cap space to sign or draft their next wide receiver, allowing the Patriots to potentially sign him to their roster.
But they have a huge problem that will ensure that doesn't happen and that is the return of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
He was the Raiders head coach when Adams was there and was very vocal about his displeasure during McDaniels' tenure. It was seen during games and after, making it entirely fair to believe that Adams will want nothing to do with the Patriots now that McDaniels is back on the staff.
It's not a great thing to already be off the list of potential teams Adams will want to sign with, but it also means the Patriots can look elsewhere to address their receiving corps and not waste their time with someone who doesn't want to be on the team, anyway.
