Patriots abruptly ending Jahlani Tavai era could hint at bigger free agency splash

Something is clearly brewing in Foxborough, though it remains to be seen what.

Moving on from a respected longtime employee is never easy, nor is it personal, though that doesn't make things any easier. However, sometimes organizations bite the bullet for the greater good, as the New England Patriots are reportedly doing by releasing veteran linebacker Jahlani Tavai.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer noted that the Patriots are "[continuing] to clear the decks," with Tavai being another sacrifice. It remains to be seen what the grand plan is, but something is clearly brewing in Foxborough. New England has ample cap space (and keeps creating more), and owns all of its 2026 NFL Draft picks, potentially foreshadowing a massive move.

Will the Patriots make a splash in free agency, or are they moving funds around in preparation for a blockbuster trade? Time will tell. Nevertheless, whatever they're plotting will come at the expense of a solid two-down thumper and valuable member of their locker room in Tavai.

Patriots' Jahlani Tavai release could hint at even bigger moves coming

Tavai was one of the longest-tenured active Patriots. He's shown why the two sides agreed to a three-year, $21 million contract extension in July 2024, both on and off the field. His presence will be missed — unless parting ways with him is followed up by the addition of high-profile player.

Maybe Tavai's departure is the difference between the Patriots landing a star pass rusher, like Trey Hendrickson or Jaelan Phillips, on the open market. Perhaps it allows them to take on three-time All-Pro wide receiver A.J. Brown, who's been connected to New England. Either way, the extra flexibility should put everyone on notice.

It's worth mentioning that Tavai wasn't the only notable contributor the Patriots have cut ties with in recent weeks. They released wideout Stefon Diggs and running back Antonio Gibson while sending center Garrett Bradbury to the Chicago Bears. The spring cleaning suggests there will be new faces in New England in due course.

Across 12 games (seven starts) in 2025, Tavai racked up 42 tackles (four for loss) and a forced fumble. A calf injury derailed him, though he remained one of the better run-stoppers in the NFL and is entering his age-30 campaign.
