After completing an unexpectedly successful 2025 season that ended with a Super Bowl appearance, the Patriots' roster needs are beyond clear heading into next week's free agency. The prioritized positions will need to be addressed early and often, including during the draft, and their recent decision to release Stefon Diggs ensured wide receiver remains at the top of the list.

Their receiving corps was considered one of their weak points throughout last season, despite Diggs proving to be exactly what they needed at the time. Now that he's set to sign with a new team, Mike Vrabel and Co. will need to look for massive upgrades, which could come as soon as next week.

It immediately puts them in contention for a player like Alec Pierce, who is considered the top receiver of this year's free agency class. There is also plenty of speculation regarding the Patriots' willingness to pull off a big-time trade.

Recent reports suggested it was unlikely they would engage in that kind of move, but the latest from NFL insider Jordan Schultz hints that it's more than likely now after Diggs' release.

The Patriots are reportedly willing to spend what is needed to upgrade their receiving corps

According to Schultz, the Patriots have been eyeing the best receivers set to hit free agency next week, and they are "believed to be prepared to spend big."

That's a significant shift from what previous reports leading up to Diggs' release have said, as most insiders have stated that they want to hold onto their draft picks to build the roster that way, rather than trade them away.

Perhaps that was before they knew what their decision on Diggs' future would ultimately be, and now that they have moved on, their philosophy has changed. Or they recognize they're in a position where good players want to sign with their team, which opens more possibilities for getting stars in the door.

They remain a top team connected to Pierce, who is set to hit free agency for the first time in his career and is projected to land a massive contract, as well as a trade for someone like AJ Brown, whom Vrabel drafted during his time with the Titans.

No matter what direction they go in, even if they try to trade for a different receiver that could be dangled by their team (like DJ Moore or Brian Thomas Jr.), it will cost a pretty penny to get a deal done, and with an estimated $16 million increase with Diggs' departure to bring them to above $57 million in cap space, they have more money to play with to bring in the kind of talent they not only want, but need.
