Ahead of the eventual 2026 NFL schedule release, it was announced that the Patriots would take on the Lions in Munich, Germany, for their Week 10 matchup, becoming their first international game since the 2024 season.
Although they have established themselves as the team to root for among German fans, there is a lot of pressure on the team to deliver in a way they haven't been able to in recent years.
Not only did they lose against the Jaguars in London during Jerod Mayo's lone season as the head coach, but they were also disastrous against the Colts in Frankfurt the year prior, a game that is speculated to be part of the reason Robert Kraft chose to move on from Bill Belichick.
This year, they'll have a chance to redeem themselves overseas against a tough opponent in the Lions, who are projected to be a top NFC contender once again. On paper, at least, this roster looks capable of bringing its international record back to .500.
The Patriots have a lot of weight on their shoulders to change their reputation overseas
Since their first game in London in 2009, the Patriots had fared well in international games, winning the three matchups in other countries when led by Tom Brady.
In the games since the quarterback left the team, however, their fate has been much worse, with those two losses becoming another reason the head coaches were eventually let go.
That shouldn't be the case with Vrabel this year, but he is in for quite a challenge facing the Lions, despite being on a more neutral playing ground.
The good thing is that the last time they played in Germany, it was a Patriots-heavy crowd, so that could certainly work in their favor. On top of that, it's an open-air stadium, which also helps the away team, since the Lions play in a dome at home.
They might need every little detail like that to give them an edge, especially if the Lions follow through on their plan to be a far more competitive team this year than they were in 2025. The Patriots already have a lot to live up to after making the Super Bowl unexpectedly, so it would be good if they can deliver on that in the U.S. and overseas.
