The Patriots entered the 2026 offseason with a fair amount of cap space to upgrade their roster after an unexpectedly successful season that ended in a Super Bowl appearance. They have accomplished a lot with the money they've spent, and they still have plenty leftover to use ahead of the upcoming season, even after acquiring AJ Brown.

That has connected them to a handful of other trades to improve their remaining weaknesses, with their pass rush being the most dire of all. And because of that, they remain as the top contender for Giants' linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux, who has been the subject of increasing trade talks over the past few months.

He is set to play on his fifth-year option this fall, and it's looking like that will be his final year in New York, which could lead the team to move on from him for a return before letting him walk in free agency next year.

The Patriots have every reason to inquire about getting a deal done, especially since the proposed trade only includes a future fifth-round pick. Considering they still need pass rush help and Thibodeaux can provide that, they should make one last trade to boost their chances at another Super Bowl run by calling the Giants.

Greg Auman of Fox Sports just gave them another reason to do that, too.

Kayvon Thibodeaux continues to be connected to New England this offseason

In predicting the five top trade candidates ahead of training camp, Auman lists the Patriots as the ideal landing spot for Thibodeaux for a number of reasons, with their need for a proven pass rusher as the primary explanation.

Beyond that, however, is a look at the Giants' current edge rusher roster, which consists of Brian Burns and Abdul Carter, plus rookie Arvell Reese, whom they selected with the fifth overall pick earlier this year.

All of that makes for a bulletproof case for the Patriots to get a deal done, with Auman being the latest NFL analyst to suggest the move.

"Thibodeaux has missed 12 games over the last two seasons, totaling only eight sacks (including 2.5 last year), but a team needing help at edge would be hoping to get the player who had 11.5 sacks in 2023. His salary is a lot for a rotational edge rusher, so unless they really want expensive protection against injury, a trade makes a lot of sense for the Giants."

Although his injuries in recent years are far from ideal, it's clear that Thibodeaux is not going to be incorporated into the Giants' defense for much longer, and the Patriots need to take advantage of that.

At just 25 years old, he fits what Mike Vrabel wants in the roster, and they have a chance to immediately extend him upon arrival. Worst-case scenario is they get him on a one-year rental and eventually move on, or re-sign him, neither of which is a bad idea for a team hoping to make another run to the Championship.

For the projected price, it's difficult to argue that they shouldn't get on the phone with New York as soon as possible, particularly since getting him on the roster sooner rather than later would be more beneficial for all involved.

There hasn't been anything reported regarding the Patriots' interest in Thibodeaux up to this point, but there's a reason that analysts continue to connect them to him, and that should be more than enough reason for the higher-ups in Foxboro to make the call.
