All of the discussion surrounding wide receivers going into free agency for the Patriots has been only about Alec Pierce and trading for AJ Brown. Not many other names have been mentioned in New England in recent weeks, but that's going to be what Mike Vrabel and Co. need to do after missing out on a few of their top targets.

Although Brown is still a possibility, the free agent pool is starting to dwindle, and now the biggest names are already off the board.

That has led the Patriots to now seriously consider a guy like Romeo Doubs, who has been with the Packers since he was drafted, and according to the Boston Globe's Christopher Price, the team has already been in contact with Doubs' agents since the legal tampering period began.

He might not be the fan favorite to become the next Patriot, but it's looking more and more like he will be, at least for the time being.

Romeo Doubs might be the Patriots' next pursuit at wide receiver

After presumably being priced out of even entertaining a deal with Pierce, the Patriots saw a few other receivers sign elsewhere, including Mike Evans. They were reportedly not in contention to bring him in, but he was the next-best name after Pierce that could have made a significant impact for Drake Maye's offense.

There are a few players still unsigned who might pique their interest, but if reports are correct, then Doubs has become the frontrunner.

The 25-year-old has never had a chance to be the go-to receiver in Green Bay, but he could serve that role in New England after recording the best season of his career in 2025. He logged 55 receptions for 724 yards and six touchdowns last year, having his statistically most impressive season since coming into the league in 2022.

If given the opportunity to be the WR1 for a quarterback like Maye, there's a chance we could see the best yet from Doubs, as he showed in his fourth season.

That's the kind of thing to get excited about, even if he isn't the player most fans were hoping for. And that's likely what Vrabel and Co. are considering, too, especially after losing out on their top targets.

But because of that, there is still a chance that they could choose to sign Doubs and trade for a player like Brown if the price is right. That would be a massive improvement for the receiving corps from last year, and would immediately help make up for the loss of Diggs, too.
