The ongoing saga between the Patriots and Christian Gonzalez over his rightful contract extension is heading into the start of the 2026 regular season, with no end in sight.
Mike Vrabel and others in the organization haven't offered any legitimate update on the negotiations, despite making the entire thing public thanks to Robert Kraft; instead, we're now hearing from Gonzalez's trainer in a recent radio interview.
Although we don't know anything definitively, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to conclude that the holdup has to do with money, and the Patriots aren't a team known for willingly handing over hefty contracts, no matter how big a superstar they might have.
That now includes Gonzalez, and the concerns about his Week 1 availability have started to get louder, especially since they're set to face the Seahawks in a Super Bowl rematch. Looking back at that game, the cornerback is arguably the only reason it didn't become more of a blowout, so he will be crucial to their performance in the season opener.
Luckily for fans worried about his potential absence, Gonzalez's trainer seemingly set the record straight on Monday afternoon and should give them one less thing to worry about over the next week.

During an appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Felger & Mazz, Gonzalez's trainer, known as Coach Flight, had a lot to say about the ongoing contract negotiations, most of which was very interesting for fans to hear.
Perhaps the best part of it all was what he had to say about the possibility of the Pro Bowler's immediate future and whether he would be willing to play in 2026 without an extension.
"I think he's comfortable playing without the extension if he has to."
Obviously, the ideal scenario is that he won't have to decide whether it's worth playing without an extension, because the Patriots will make things right and offer him what he rightfully deserves.
But hearing that if the worst possible outcome does happen, that being they can't reach an agreement before next week's game, then it sounds like Gonzalez will still be there for his team and play this season, which is massive considering the alternative.
Because he's become an integral part of their defensive success, not having him on the field would surely lead to more losses than they would like, and that would be devastating after a season that ended in a Super Bowl appearance.
Hopefully, the Patriots will work with more urgency to get a deal done sooner rather than later, so this situation will no longer be a distraction or risk creating a rift between the team and Gonzalez moving forward.
It shouldn't have taken this long in the first place, but because that's where we are, the only solution is to get it done and get it done quickly.
