In the weeks between minicamp and training camp, the Patriots continue to be linked to free agent pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney for several reasons, his familiarity with head coach Mike Vrabel being one of the most notable.

Beyond that, the defensive line remains a considerable weakness to most analysts and fans, so Clowney would be an instant fix in that area. His experience as a leading pass rusher, coming off an 8.5-sack season with the Cowboys, could bring that kind of production to New England and boost a concern the coaching staff doesn't appear to have any urgency to fix.

Considering the short list of unsigned players at this point in the offseason, Clowney might be their best option, and because analysts keep connecting him to New England, it might be a hint to the organization that they need to make a move.

Although they appear comfortable with the group they have, and there's certainly a lot of optimism about some of their more overlooked players, like Elijah Ponder and Bradyn Swinson, they still lack a legitimate threat they can rely on.

Clowney can be that guy.

The Patriots cannot escape their connection to Jadeveon Clowney much longer

Given that they want to replicate the success they had in 2025, which led them to the Super Bowl, it's crucial that the Patriots look to boost their pass rush before Week 1. It was a weak point for them last year, but losing K'Lavon Chaisson in free agency is going to hurt the production they will have this year.

On top of that, Harold Landry III, who was signed to be their top pass rusher, is still recovering from offseason surgery, and his production during his first season in New England wasn't completely up to par with what the team needed.

Not having an established threat like Clowney puts a lot of pressure on players who have never dealt with that kind of spotlight and creates expectations they might not be able to meet. That's unfair not only to those players but also to the defense as a whole, and it could be a significant reason they should seriously consider signing Clowney.

At this point in his career, he won't be nearly as costly to sign, and they could get a lot of bang for their buck by taking the risk of bringing him in.

He's been fairly consistent throughout his career, and it's easy to assume he could bring that to New England if given the chance. Because he continues to be linked to them, it might be time to really look into why analysts want to see him in a Patriots uniform and see if it makes sense for what they're trying to do, because on paper, it does.
