After a disappointing end to a season in which he was a top-2 MVP candidate for much of the year, Drake Maye struggled at the start of the 2026 season, leaving many doubters feeling vindicated by their early takes that he wasn't a legitimate competitor.
Facing the most difficult strength of schedules of the last 40 years certainly contributed to Maye's issues, along with a long list of injuries across the offense that only made his job tougher. That is, until things clicked against the Bills in Week 4, and everything turned around.
All it took was beating the Patriots' biggest rival in Buffalo to show who Maye really is and put him back on an MVP trajectory. Since that game, he has carried the team and led them to a 5-3 record, putting his turnover issues behind him and thriving despite an offense decimated by injuries.
Maye has set new franchise records, or tied ones set by Tom Brady, and has officially put himself back on the NFL radar just weeks before their bye week.
That has his teammates buzzing and his head coach saying some pretty strong words about the kind of player he is and will be for the Patriots for a long time. In fact, Mike Vrabel essentially labeled him one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and that's something Patriots fans will love to hear.
Mike Vrabel couldn't be more confident in Drake Maye after his Week 8 performance
While speaking to reporters after Sunday's game, Vrabel had a lot to say about Maye's performance and the overall situation, especially since he had only 3 receivers (Efton Chism III, DeMario Douglas, and Kyle Williams) and backup tight ends (Eli Raridon and Tanner Arkin) to work with.
To say that he hyped his quarterback to the moon would be an understatement.

That's quite a thing to say about a 24-year-old quarterback with just over 2 full seasons of starting experience under his belt. But Maye has proven he is the real deal time and time again, with his bounce-back performance this year as the clearest example.
Not only is he an elite passer, casually throwing 40+ yard bombs to receivers on a weekly basis, but his instincts help keep plays alive, along with the athleticism that allows him to run for first downs and touchdowns, which he did again this past Sunday.
Maye's poise and intricate understanding of the game have made him an invaluable asset for the Patriots' offense, which has been on full display this season with countless injuries plaguing the offense, yet he's able to overcome the obstacles (and the odds) to keep the team afloat, putting them near the top of the AFC picture through 8 games.
That's the kind of growth any team wants in its quarterback, and Vrabel makes it clear he is beyond thrilled to have him leading the Patriots.

The Patriots are fortunate to enter their Week 9 matchup against the Packers with a 5-3 record and are just two games away from finally reaching their bye week.
Plenty of tough games remain on the schedule, but with Maye on the roster and thriving in a way most quarterbacks wouldn't, given the circumstances, it's easy to be confident in what the Patriots can accomplish this year, even if there are lingering concerns in certain areas.
No matter what, they're lucky to have Maye leading the way, and given how much he's developed in just 2.5 years, it will be exciting to see what kind of quarterback he becomes in Year 5 or Year 10.
