Over the last few years, the Patriots have found themselves in a predicament they weren't accustomed to, making it increasingly difficult to get back to their roots of being one of the most successful franchises in professional football.

For much of the last two decades, it wasn't difficult to sign free agent talent because New England was the place to be if you wanted to win, on top of playing alongside Tom Brady and being coached by Bill Belichick.

Plenty of players would line up to sign with the team during that time, but much of that desire left when Brady did in 2020. Despite Belichick remaining the head coach through the 2023 season, his history of not wanting to spend too much on players and the team's dive into obscurity made it nearly impossible to add the talent needed to be a competitive team again.

That has since gotten even worse with Belichick out of the picture and was beyond apparent when Jerod Mayo was named the head coach. It led to a problematic free agency that seemed to do more harm than good, which the team hopes to avoid now that Mike Vrabel has been named the new guy in charge.

With Vrabel's previous experience as a head coach and the connections he made throughout his career, it should inevitably pay off when free agency begins. But the Patriots look like they'll have another driving force for players wanting to come to Foxboro, at least according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

Drake Maye is expected to be another reason for free agents to want to play for the Patriots

Because Maye was considered among the best talents in the 2024 NFL Draft, and not just at quarterback, there is a high interest in what he can accomplish throughout next season as the official starter from Week 1.

He was already impressed with his rookie performance, even with all the forces working against him all season long. This piqued the interest of many players around the league, which is a great development for those looking for a new team in 2025.

Maye has since developed an aura of sorts around the league because of this, which could easily translate to having players want to join the Patriots in one way or another.

Considering the rough season the Patriots had last year and the dramatic changes they have already undergone this offseason, it's a great sign that the team might still be considered a desirable destination to play, even if they're not believed to be heading to the playoffs any time soon.

The addition of Vrabel on the sidelines and an impressively experienced coaching staff on top of Maye having a "mythical reputation" could be the combination the Patriots need to make a big splash in free agency and the draft, which couldn't happen at a better time.

If they manage to make some drastic moves because of the intrigue, it might not be too presumptuous to say that they might give the AFC East a run for their money next year, especially since the Dolphins and Jets are dealing with their dramatic changes to their coaching staff and rosters.

That would be the best possible scenario for the win-needy Patriots, even more so for the development of Maye.
