It's not even training camp and one Patriots draft pick might already be buried

The Patriots came out of the 2026 NFL Draft having hit every position of need, with some positions in particular adding multiple new players to the roster. Among them was the defensive line, specifically the edge and linebacker positions.

Because they didn't re-sign K'Lavon Chaisson in free agency and they eventually released Jahlani Tavai, it made a lot of sense that they drafted a few at those positions, and there was immediately a lot of excitement around a few of the rookies they chose to bring in, no matter which round they went in.

Among them was seventh-round linebacker/pass rusher Quintayvious Hutchins out of Boston College, with much of that excitement due to the fact that he would be staying in the area. But he also showed a lot of potential throughout his career, and the hope is that it could translate well to the NFL.

The problem is that throughout the spring, he didn't manage to stand out amongst the crowd and instead watched some of his teammates steal the spotlight. That puts Hutchins in an unfavorable position heading into training camp, and he might have a long way to go to earn a spot on the final roster.

The current Patriots' roster doesn't provide much opporunity for at least one 2026 rookie

Looking at the current linebacker group, Hutchins is far down the depth chart already as it is, and it's not just because he was a seventh-round pick.

He's inevitably competing with some of the less experienced players, as the top of the depth chart will remain Harold Landry, Robert Spillane, and Christian Elliss. A few others have already impressed so far this offseason, mainly Elijah Ponder and Bradyn Swinson, but even a rookie has started to draw attention, which is not ideal for Hutchins.

Sixth-rounder Namdi Obiazor got on the radar early this offseason, and the expectation is that it will only grow once training camp begins later this month. He brings even more competition for Hutchins to climb over, making it more difficult to earn that coveted roster spot.

He will have to string together several standout practices to start taking the attention away from his teammates, and from what we've seen so far, it's difficult to say with any certainty that he will be able to do that.

On top of it all, he's facing an assault charge that will need to be resolved before the season begins, and that, in and of itself, could be a fate-sealer before he even gets a chance to take the field with the Patriots.

It's far from what anyone expected from him heading into the offseason, and it's certainly far from what the Patriots wanted when they drafted him a few months ago. So there's a lot that Hutchins will need to overcome, on and off the field, before his NFL future is at all secure, and we'll have to see if he's up for the challenge the Patriots will present, assuming he gets the chance.
