The Patriots have not made it a secret that they plan to address the defensive line early and often throughout the upcoming draft, and they're believed to start that with their first-round pick. Eliot Wolf spoke about the impressive class of linemen this year and how the team would like to take advantage of it, but they could also look at a newly available trade option, too.

Although they have emphasized their desire to build a young roster through the draft, Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf haven't turned down an opportunity to bring in a seasoned veteran or two at key positions, so there's a chance they will, at the very least, look into what it would cost to get Dexter Lawrence to Foxboro.

He is just one of the few Giants players who have expressed their frustrations with the organization this offseason, and the latest update is bad news for New York fans.

Multiple insiders revealed that the Giants and Lawrence had been working on an extension and have yet to agree on a deal. It has now led to an impasse, and it's more than likely he will be up for trade ahead of or during next week's draft.

The Patriots should be one of the teams on the phone about what the Giants might want in a return, because the idea of pairing him with Christian Barmore and Milton Williams might be too good to pass on.

Dexter Lawrence should be on the Patriots trade radar leading up to the NFL Draft

The 28-year-old was drafted in the first round of the 2019 Draft, and has spent the last seven years with the Giants. He has been as consistent as they come on the field, being named to three Pro Bowls and only missing a handful of games during his career so far.

His production level was much lower than what he generally puts out last year, and perhaps that's one reason for the Giants' hesitance to award him the kind of contract he's looking for, and while that isn't an ideal situation for the Patriots to take over, they should at least inquire what it would take to get a trade done.

A recent proposed trade suggested that New England send over a second-round pick and a player like wide receiver Kayshon Boutte, who is on an expiring contract, or linebacker Christian Elliss, since both are positions in need of upgrading for New York.

Unless the Patriots plan to keep Boutte beyond the 2026 season or feel Elliss is part of their long-term plans, then there's no reason to rule either out of a potential trade package, especially if that means getting Lawrence on the defense.

That might be all that it takes for the higher-ups in New York to make a trade happen, and the Patriots feel like the big winners in that scenario.

Not only would they get a solid locker room leader in Lawrence, adding more veteran experience to the group, but he's also a proven asset on the field, just one season removed from totaling 9 sacks and ranking in the top 10 in the league for his pass rush talent.

That's exactly what the Patriots need, and if they feel that last season was a fluke for Lawrence and they can get the best performance out of him, then they should get on the phone as soon as possible.
