With the defense on the mind of so many Patriots fans leading up to the start of free agency next week, it's hard to overlook the team's chance of signing linebacker Bobby Okereke, who the Giants decided to cut for cap space reasons despite how productive and instrumental he has been for them on and off the field.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz shared the news on Tuesday night, and it immediately sparked interest in New England, as linebacker is a position the Patriots need to upgrade this offseason.

Who better than an esteem veteran known for being a great culture fit and a vocal leader?

Because that's such an important part of what Mike Vrabel is trying to build in Foxboro since taking over the team last year, Okereke needs to be a player that he and Eliot Wolf seriously consider, especially since he was not expected to be available.

Even better, he has a connection to a Patriots staffer who helped bring him to New York in 2023, giving them a potential leg up on the competition that will inevitably be pursuing him next week.

Giants' cap casualty could become the Patriots' next star linebacker in 2026

Okereke's connection to Ryan Cowden, the Patriots' Vice president of player personnel who previously served as the Giants' Executive advisor to the general manager, could be a significant factor in their favor when the legal tampering window opens next Monday.

That familiarity could help get the linebacker to New England, and they'll need all the help they can get to bring in quality players to boost their roster to compete for another Super Bowl next year.

There haven't been many free agent linebackers considered great fits for Vrabel's defense, but Okereke's a fit on the field and in the locker room.

Not only did he log 385 combined tackles, 19 for a loss, nine quarterback hits, four interceptions returned for 116 yards, 19 passes defended, seven forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and 5.5 sacks, but he became an integral part of the ever-changing Giants' locker room and was known for being a mentor to his teammates.

That's something Vrabel and Co. will value and might be more than enough for them to seriously consider pursuing Okereke.

Considering it's already being called a huge loss for the Giants, and a decision they didn't take lightly, it proves just how much he was valued on his team, and that's exactly the kind of player the Patriots want and need as they establish a new culture.
