Excitement is building around the 2026 New England Patriots, now equipped with not only an MVP-contending quarterback, Drake Maye, but also a top new receiving tandem.
That duo is A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs, the Patriots' newest top starters. Added to several other returning solid NFL wideouts, the receiver room is now poised to take full advantage of Maye's pinpoint passing.
Brown is a true NFL superstar, and with Maye throwing him the rock, the expectations for his 2026 season are stratospheric. As the Patriots' first true No. 1 receiver since Julian Edelman retired after 2019, Brown, if he stays healthy, can have a huge 2026.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler cites an ESPN survey of NFL "executives, coaches, and scouts" rating NFL receivers, and Patriot Nation will relish seeing A.J. Brown ranked the ninth-best receiver in the league.

In Brown's seven prior NFL seasons, he notched more than 1,000 yards receiving in six. His only miss was a season when he missed games due to injury. Now, with Maye throwing him the ball, his production is likely to skyrocket. The ESPN survey agrees and has Brown at a lofty No. 9 on its list of top NFL receivers.
"Just listen to how one coordinator describes how Brown will help New England in 2026. 'He changes the coverages people play, everything will be rolled his way, and it will lighten the box for Josh [McDaniels] to really get the run game going,' the coordinator said. 'He gives them run-after-catch explosion and isolation down the field on 50-50 plays that they didn't have.'
No player has more catches (88) and receiving yards (1,812) on tight-window passes (less than 1 yard of separation from defender at arrival of the pass) since entering the NFL in 2019 than Brown, per NFL Next Gen Stats."
Drake Maye had to make do with a relatively poor wide receiving unit in his 2024 rookie season. In 2025, Mike Vrabel made a point of adding new, proven NFL receivers to augment that unit. One was Stefon Diggs, who played very well, and the other was former Bills uber-clutch receiver Mack Hollins.
Both were well-worth Vrabel's investments and improved the room on the way to the Super Bowl.
Now, Vrabel has upped the ante again by spending serious money on Doubs in free agency and making a blockbuster trade with the Eagles to land Brown. He's added better options for Maye than he had in either of his first two seasons. Brown and Doubs will slot right into the top 2 receiving slots.
The NFL is ruled by quarterbacks. If you have a really good or great one, you can contend for the big prizes. If not, you can't. The Patriots and Mike Vrabel are fortunate to have one of the NFL's best in Drake Maye, no matter how low some nonsensical rankings place him.
Fortified by the additions of Brown and Doubs, expect Maye to have an even better 2026 than his spectacular 2025 season. His two new receivers will see to that. And his No.1 is a true NFL difference-maker.
