Colin Cowherd's wild Patriots comparison is disrespectful but not entirely wrong

We're at that point in an NFL season when wild comparisons or blanketed statements are made regarding the Patriots at the height of their dynasty and a current team that is either defying the odds or performing at a high level. Those who cover the NFL have proven to be eager to dethrone the impressive two decades the Patriots ruled the league, and will so for any reason as often as possible.

Over the last decade and more, most have already tried to declare other quarterbacks as the greatest of all time over Tom Brady, despite the statistics and accolades proving they're entirely wrong.

From Patrick Mahomes to Aaron Rodgers, all of the top-name quarterbacks in recent memory have been deemed the GOAT at one time or another. This topic remains a debated topic to this day, even after Brady won his seventh Super Bowl.

They have also attempted to name specific teams to be better than the Patriots' best rosters throughout their reign, which is what the latest ridiculous take revolves around. And is it surprising that it's coming from Colin Cowherd?

Colin Cowherd compares 2024 Lions to the 2007 Patriots for...reasons?

There have been some unexpectedly good teams so far this season, with the Lions probably at the forefront of them all. They have been a historically cursed franchise, even with Matthew Stafford under center and "Megatron" Calvin Johnson on the field.

The decision to trade Stafford seemed questionable at first, especially since they received Jared Goff in return. But it has proven to be worth it for both teams, and the Lions are now on an impressive run atop the NFC North and have their eyes set on the playoffs for a second season in a row.

That has prompted a lot of excitement from fans and even those who support football in general, which might explain Colin Cowherd's latest take. He states that the 2024 Lions are the "most dominant team" since the 2007 Patriots, which is outlandish and unfathomable on the surface, but he's not entirely wrong, no matter how much we want to believe he is.

Upon first hearing a statement like this, there's a lot of defending the undefeated Patriots season to do, regardless of their losing the Super Bowl to taint their history-making year. It seems like another scenario when a pundit wants to diminish what the Patriots accomplished due to recency bias. That likely plays a big part in why Cowherd is even saying such a thing.

However, if you dig deeper into the statistics, he's not entirely wrong.

Looking at DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) which is defined as "a metric used to evaluate how well a team, player, or unit performs in the NFL.DVOA compares each play in a season to a league-average baseline, taking into account the situation and the quality of the opponent. The goal of DVOA is to distribute credit for scoring points and winning games more fairly," the 2024 Lions are only behind the 1991 Redskins (56.9%), the 2007 Patriots (52.9%( and 1985 Bears (52.5%).

That puts them in elite company, making it a fair argument for Colin to suggest they are almost as dominant as the 2007 Patriots. Beyond that, the comparisons don't live up to how incredible that New England team was from top to bottom. And let's not start the Goff is anything like Brady argument.

It would be nice to believe that is something that no one in the NFL sphere will ever utter, but wilder things have been said, so it's not a sure thing.
