Christian Gonzalez's candid contract update paints the Patriots in a bad light

When a team has a player as talented as Christian Gonzalez, it would seem as though reaching an agreement on a massive contract extension would be incredibly easy.

For a team like the Patriots, who have not fared well with drafting players who went on to become superstars, awarding the cornerback with a warranted payday should have been one of the easiest decisions of the entire offseason, yet we're just two weeks out from the regular season, and it doesn't appear that they're anywhere closer to getting it done than they were at the start of the offseason.

With few updates in recent weeks and Gonzalez's mysterious absence from training camp over the past week, it's unsurprising to hear him say that the ongoing situation has grown "frustrating," which he candidly shared with reporters on Tuesday afternoon.

To be fair, it's the same way fans are feeling at this point, too.

This is the first time Gonzalez has commented on the situation with a bit more clarity beyond insisting that he's just focused on practice.

That was his immediate follow-up comment for the rest of his media availability, but his frustration is notable, particularly coming just a few hours after the latest update from Eliot Wolf.

The Patriots continue to draw out extension talks with Christian Gonzalez

Ahead of Tuesday's practice, Wolf spoke to reporters about a variety of topics, with Gonzalez the biggest story, as he was expected to return to practice again and speak to the media afterward.

When asked if there was an update on the situation, Wolf could offer nothing other than emphasizing that the team wants to extend him and that they are still working on getting a deal done, which is no different from what he said weeks ago.

Considering they've had the entire offseason to get a contract signed, it's beyond questionable why it's taking this long and how they don't appear to be making much progress.

Gonzalez has become a face of the defense since he was drafted in 2023 and is already labeled one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL today, which should make it easy to keep him around for the foreseeable future.

Perhaps the Patriots are becoming too comfortable with the fact that they already picked up his fifth-year option for the 2027 season and could franchise tag him in 2028, ensuring he's still on the team for the next three seasons.

That might be what's making them lack urgency in getting this deal done, on top of hints that Robert Kraft isn't as willing to dish out the kind of salary Gonzalez has earned the right to, which Mike Vrabel and even Wolf slightly suggested over the past few days.

It's a frustrating part of the process, and it's not something the Patriots should be dealing with now that they have become a competitive team again. They are fortunate to have a player like Gonzalez on the team, and he could become the franchise's defensive pillar for years, much like Drake Maye will be the face of the offense, yet they're risking a lot by dragging out extension talks.
