Going into the 2026 offseason, knowing that superstar cornerback Christian Gonzalez was up for his first extension, most Patriots fans assumed a deal would be struck sooner rather than later, given how important he has already become for the defense.
Not only that, but he's already proven to be one of the best at the position in the league through just three years, even with his rookie season cut short due to injury. Given that the Patriots haven't had a clear game-changing CB1 on the roster since (arguably) Stephon Gilmore, it seemed fair to assume that Eliot Wolf would want to get an extension done fairly quickly.
So the fact that we're only a few weeks out from Week 1, which happens to be a Super Bowl rematch against the Seahawks in Seattle, and Gonzalez has still not signed an extension, despite Devon Witherspoon signing his last weekend, is very concerning.
Even worse, he's starting to skip practice, presumably because negotiations have stalled, although Mike Vrabel insists he's dealing with some sort of injury.
The latest updates from NFL insiders don't offer much of a silver lining either, as most fans hoped more was going on behind the scenes than we knew and that a deal was closer to getting done than they were letting on.
But according to Adam Schefter, that's not the case, and it's looking worse as more time goes by.
Adam Schefter shares the brutal truth about negotiations between Christian Gonzalez and the Patriots
During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday, Schefter shared the latest rumblings coming out of Foxboro about Gonzalez's extension.
Unfortunately, it's far from what Patriots fans were hoping to hear; it's the complete opposite, and Schefter doesn't seem all that optimistic that a deal will be done any time soon.
@AdamSchefter is “not so sure” that the #Patriots and Christian Gonzalez will get an extension done quickly.

Because Gonzalez has become such a vital part of their recent defensive success, it seemed like an absolute no-brainer decision for the Patriots to work emphatically to reach an agreement on an extension with Gonzalez this offseason.
The fact that this hasn't been the case whatsoever is creating even more concern as the negotiations continue, especially now that the cornerback is skipping practice.
We have already heard from Robert Kraft on the matter, who revealed several weeks ago that the team had offered Gonzalez a contract that would have made him the highest-paid cornerback in the league, which should have made it easy for him to sign on the dotted line.
But reports suggested the contract wasn't written the way Gonzalez liked, which is part of why the conversations have stalled.
Then a wrench was thrown into the mix when Devon Witherspoon got his extension done first, and although that should've made it easier for the Patriots to get a deal done, it hasn't accomplished anything in the days since.
Now, hearing from Schefter that little progress has been made is concerning, and it makes it hard to believe Gonzalez will sign a deal anytime soon.
It would be far better for everyone involved to get this done and over with before the season begins, or there is a big chance Gonzalez doesn't suit up for Week 1. Considering he was the major reason that the Seahawks didn't completely demolish the Patriots in the Super Bowl, it would be devastating for him to be on the sideline for the rematch.
It's a disaster they need to do everything in their power to avoid.
